In 1942 radar expert Jack Nissenthall volunteered for a suicidal mission to join a combat team who were making a surprise landing at Dieppe in occupied France. His assignment was to penetrate a German radar station on a cliff above "Green Beach". Because Nissenthall knew the secrets of British and US radar technology, he was awarded a personal bodyguard of sharpshooters. Their orders were to protect him, but in the event of possible capture lo kill him. .His choice was to succeed or die. The story of what happened to him and his bodyguards in nine hours under fire is one of World War II's most terrifying true stories of personal heroism 'Green Beach has blown the lid off one of the Second World War's best-kept secrets' - Daily Express 'If I had been aware of the orders given to the escort to shoot him rather than let him be captured, I would have cancelled them immediately' - Lord Mountbatten 'Green Beach is a vivid, moving and at times nerve-racking reconstruction of an act of outstanding but horrific heroism' Sunday Express

Young Green Beach is a true account of an incident of over 60 years ago which has been the subject of a great deal of contraversial discussion since its occurrence. The Dieppe raid of August 1942 took place over a few places near Dieppe but the area on which this book is mainly concentrated is Pourville , about two miles from Dieppe. I was in my early twenties during the 1939-1946 war and lived in the north of England so the momentous happenings in the south of the country and over on the continent affected me very little. I got on with my life with its occasional air-raids and was fortunate not to lose any close, loved ones.I am now in my eighties and I can safely say that nothing ever made the war real to me in the way that this book, which I have just read, did. It is mainly the story of a modest man, a radar expert in the R.A.F. who volunteered for a very dangerous mission to try to get the low-down on the extent of the Germans' knowledge of this branch of developing technology.I lived with the people who were there, I shared their sorrows and their problems and I think they deserve to be remembered forever.I often go to Dieppe but my vists from now on will feel like pilgrimages because of this book.

Lee Dixon "If I tell you, I'll have to kill you," is a comment sometimes heard during discussion of highly classified information. There are several cases where military personnel chose not to be taken alive because of the secrets that they knew. One is US Navy Captain John Cromwell that chose to go down with the submarine rather than be taken alive because of his knowledge about the US code-breaking capability. "Green Beach" is a story about an RAF non-commissioned officer that had substantial knowledge about RADAR, was physically conditioned and therefore was selected to participate in the raid on Dieppe, France in 1942. Someone with his knowledge was required because if they got inside the facility he needed to know what accomplishments the Germans had made in this area. A team was assigned to protect him so that he might get into the RADAR facility but if he was wounded, their secondary job was to ensure he was not taken alive. This book does an excellent job of tracing the planning and execution that went into this raid on German facilities on the French coast. Several thousand soldiers participated in the attack with the bulk of them Canadian servicemen. A small number of US Army Rangers and British also participated in preparation for what would eventually be D-Day at Normandy. The author, James Leasor, captures the accomplishments of these brave men recounting both those that succeeded and those that were killed and left behind. Based upon my early military experience with RADAR it was enjoyable to learn the history of this discipline in an operational setting. The only distraction that I noted was the repeated reference to the team's responsibility to kill a fellow serviceman rather than let him be taken alive. After a few times it failed to add anything to the story.Dieppe is a very important event in the history of the Canadian military and "Green Beach" does an exceptional job of documenting their bravery and sacrifice.

SINCE last I took up my pen in the service of my friend who on July 30, 1918, laid down his sword in the service of his country, fame, and yet greater fame, has been busy with his name. Any further eulogy by my hand would have only the point of being altogether superfluous and the foolish effect of being very much at the rear of the situation. Further, the story of Joyce Kilmer, doubtless in very fair measure, is known to nearly everyone. An account of his career is not to be appreciably elaborated here.

Although I did not agree with everything J. Kilmer articulates in a couple of these essays, I still loved his work. A favorite, worthy for a shelf. And one reason that it is 5 stars is because I learned more on the structure of a sonnet in a single essay than anywhere else.

The object of this work has been from historical data to show that the Southern States had rightfully the power to withdraw from a Union into which they had, as sovereign communities, voluntarily entered; that the denial of that right was a violation of the letter and spirit of the compact between the States; and that the war waged by the Federal Government against the seceding States was in disregard of the limitations of the Constitution, and destructive of the principles of the Declaration of Independence.

  • Finalist in the Travel category - Indie Excellence Awards
A million things bind us to the repetitive drudgery of our every day lives. Our imagined confines breed a horde of excuses that keep us from stepping outside of the usual, the monotonous, and taking that final step needed to start our travel dreams--the long-term vacation, living overseas dreams. This is a true story of what happens when comfort stays on the tarmac and fades into the distance like a forgotten canvas duffle bag. This is about making sure the bucket list gets completed tomorrow. Throughout her life, Shelby Simpson has abandoned monotony in search of the next great adventure. She has visited 39 countries and lived in seven--traveling from the surreal beaches of Fiji to the winding halls of a Bolivian prison, and to dozens of locations in between. Each new destination reveals a new story, a tasty local cocktail, and a piece of a powerful truth: Fear is the only barrier to discovering that people are really all the same. This book is a glimpse at the wonders we can discover when we find the courage to take that first step to travel outside of our comfort zone. There are belly laughs, panicked gasps, and awed silences to be had in every corner of this magical globe. All it takes is a little gumption, a shot (or five) of vodka, and the goodness inherent in people everywhere.

Review "Even the most confirmed armchair travelers will find themselves infected with wanderlust after reading this irresistible compilation." - Kirkus"Refreshing, hysterical, and educational all at the same time." - Pacific Book Review

About the Author Shelby Simpson was born and raised in Enid, Oklahoma until leaving to attend college in Arizona at age eighteen. During her time in Flagstaff, she took out a loan to study overseas–a decision that would launch a ten-year travel career. She believes in treating her body like a temple Monday through Friday and a carnival Saturday through Sunday. Rugged nature is her happy place, with a solid dance session (to throwback hip-hop jams) on an LED dance floor as a close second. She is currently working on fitting five lifetimes into one.

By jeremy knight It is with a fresh perspective somewhere between a travel book and personal blog that Shelby Simpson takes us around the globe. Passing on her experiences for better or worse, generally the former, which when wrapped in laughter make for quite the page turner. So much so I found it quite addictive reading finishing it in less than a handful of days. This is a must read for any travel enthusiast.

It was a mix between Mickey Spillane and Agatha Christie. When young Billy Kane's millionaire philanthropist boss is found murdered everything points to Billy. Escaping the police to try to prove his innocence, Billy takes refuge in the underbelly of the city, only to discover he is a dead-ringer for a criminal boss who has, seemingly disappeared. Taking over his look-alike's gang, Billy keeps busy trying to keep up his charade, foil the gang's criminal plans and find the real killer of his beloved boss. Literly coming through a trap door, the Woman in Black appears to complicate Billy's already perilous life. In and out of scrapes, close calls, and dangerous meetings, will Billy survive until he is exhonorated? An exciting read!

It is pretty much the same story with a slightly different twist. Our hero is a young man who just happens to be the spittin' image of one of the Kings of the Underworld in Lower Manhattan, fellow name of "The Rat." Our hero just also happens to be framed for the murder of his employer, and life long friend of his father, and the theft of a priceless collection of rubies. He is on the run when he stumbles on a planned robbery and decides to go to where the robbery is in progress, and just happens to get recognized by the thief as "The Rat." He decides to assume that identity while he works to clear himself of the robbery and murder he has been framed for. So far, so good, but wait a minute; there's a dame in the game, and she is out to wreck "The Rat." She has the goods on him and has the evidence to send him to the chair, unless he does her bidding and foils the jobs he and his gang have already planned. Of course, our hero has no idea what these plans are, and on the run for his life for a crime he didn't commit, he can't tell HER who he really is...well, I think you can figure out where this is going. For free on Kindle...this one is worth your time.

Laughing at the Sun: The Story of a Man Who Changed His Spots, by Michael Nejman

About the Author Like a lot of guys, I had this 12-year-old pleasure-seeking self always wanting to get out and distract me. My YOLO lifestyle from 1981 through 1996 led to an enthusiastic pursuit of a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spontaneity and an “I’ll sleep when I die” existence. Most men grow out of this stage in their late 20s. I had matured to a point, mostly in my professional life as I had a driven and highly responsible career in the academic world. However, I guess I was a late-bloomer when it came to making mature, responsible decisions when it came to the romantic partners I pursued. After a string of failed relationships, I turned 40 and realized it was time for me to change my ways and become a better man, a better person. Much of this journey is documented in Laughing at the Sun: The Story of a Man Who Changed His Spots. I am the author of well-regarded academic works, as well as a freelance writer of life-style articles. I have written for the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, L.A. Times Syndicate, and Programming magazine, with some of my articles being nationally and internationally syndicated. I currently reside in a Chicago suburb with my wife.

Having said that, you know how when your friends tell you they're having an art show and ask you to please come and see their work in the hopes you'll buy something? During the whole trip there you're thinking "God, I hope I at least like their stuff." Well, I love this book. Michael was a friend and adviser to me in my early college years and provided wise counsel...apparently he never followed himself. Reading his book opened my eyes to our common, but unspoken, bond about the trials of deciding to be an adult and embracing that choice. Our internal battles we have as individuals, not just men, and how we emerge from those battles, determine who we become in life. Michael's desire to change his spots is a battle I identify with and this book comes at a perfect time for me. I am grateful for this insight into Michael's life and getting a chance to better understand him. Whether you're going through changes in your life, have gone through changes or just want to read about someone going through changes, this is an easy read. It has a casual feel to it as though you're there for the conversation like the proverbial "fly on the wall" and get the chance to see two friends learn more about each other and become better friends. Who knows? Maybe there's a lesson (or two?) in there for us all. Enjoy!!

Rolling confessional and abusive bathroom behavior goose up the tension on lonnnnnng road trip By Robert Fischer I love it not only because i'm the other half of the road trip, but because it brings up all the issues between two very opposite men who also have to be best friends. The true test of friendship is not how you get along over a long macchiato at Starbucks but if one can tolerate the other's bizarre bathroom habits. I remember schlepping across the US in that Damn rental truck that was fixed to only go 55 mph at the top speed. It was as frustrating as listening to Michael's well organized OCD road trip song list. Damn that boom box. The last chapter is the most memorable because it is a cherished memory of my husband, Edward Proffitt and the "Paradise ranch" in Palm springs, so named by Mr. Nejman hissself! I don't read so actually forcing myself to read this short and lively tome was a grueling challenge. Not because the writing ws dreary but because I have trouble sitting in one place for an entire hour.Mr. Nejman and I, Bob Fischer, survived that trip and are better men for it. And the "rolling confessional" so aptly labeled , really afforded Michael to see life from both sides then and me to be slightly more tolerant of the weird idea of going Hiking, yet, in national parks and the ominous threat of death by falling if I continued to abuse and make fun of him which is so so so easy and delightful to do!!!!

By momoftwo As two male friends take a literal and figurative journey together, we get to share in their insights about, life, love, and the pursuit of happiness, in this wonderful memoir from writer Michael Nejman. As an avid reader of stories centered around women's friendships, it's so interesting to peek into the less chronicled life of friendship between men. Their cross country road trip rips at the seams of their long term friendship and at their own insecurities and search for their place in the world. It's a moving, and at the same time, funny view of how two friends navigate the trip, without GPS, but with a heartfelt and deeply felt need to truly find themselves. Pick up this book and you will no doubt get an insight to wherever you are in your life's journey. Highly recommended!!

Excerpt from The Northmen, Columbus, and Cabot, 985-1503At its annual meeting in December, 1902, the American Historical Association approved and adopted the plan of the present series, and the undersigned was chosen as its general editor. The purpose of the series was to provide individual readers of history, and the libraries of schools and colleges, with a comprehensive and well-rounded collection of those classical narratives on which the early history of the United States is founded, or of those narratives which, if not precisely classical, hold the most important place as sources of American history anterior to 1700. The reasons for undertaking such a project are for the most part obvious. No modern history, however excellent, can give the reader all that he can get from the ipsissima verba of the first narrators, Argonauts or eyewitnesses, vivacious explorers or captains courageous. There are many cases in which secondary narrators have quite hidden from view these first authorities, whom it is therefore a duty to restore to their rightful position. In a still greater number of instances, the primitive narrations have become so scarce and expensive that no ordinary library can hope to possess anything like a complete set of the classics of early American history. The series is to consist of such volumes as will illustrate the early history of all the chief parts of the country, with an additional volume of general index. The plan contemplates, not a body of extracts, but in general the publication or republication of whole works or distinct parts of works. In the case of narratives originally issued in some other language than English, the best available translations will be used, or fresh versions made.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Olson and Bourne (in the series "Original Narratives of Early American History") (1906) The Saga of Eric the Red(abt. AD1200 or before, but not before 1100); The Vinland History (of/from the Flat Island Book)(abt. AD 1380);other Vinland references. There were no longer any other people in Greenland when Eric the Red found and colonized it, but there was some evidence of previous occupation. Remember Eric the Red, Thorvald's son, Leif the Lucky, Eric's son, and Thorfinn Karlsefni, Thord's son and the land of grapes, wild sown grain, maple trees (maybe), salmon, furs, timber, and Skrellings. Columbus’s Articles of Agreement with the king and queen. Grant of Titles to Columbus by Spain. Columbus's Journal of the first voyage, as epitomized by Bartolomé de las Casas; Columbus's team visited San Salvador Island(called Watlings Island from 1680-1925), Rum Cay (called S.M. de la Concepcion), Long Is.(called Fernandina), Saomete (now Crooked Is.)(called Isabella), Las Islas de Arena, Cuba (called Juana), and Hayti (now called Hispaniola) and Tortuga Is.. Columbus was a bad boss and man because he kept two sets of books to lie to his men (and other captains?) about the distances traveled (Could he really have succeeded in tricking them, when others presumably gathered the mileage data?), stole the prize, an annuity and other things, from the man who first saw land, and kidnapped Indians starting at the first island. Letters from Columbus. Dr. Chanca’s letter on Columbus’s second voyage. Narrative of Columbus’s third voyage per Las Casas. More Columbus letters. Letter of Columbus on the fourth voyage, when he went to the Gulf of Paria (between Venezuela and Trinidad) and Honduras to Panama. Misc. letters describing John Cabot’s voyages.

“The animals went in two by two. Hurrah!”

The Jungle Book is the story of Mowgli, a young boy raised by wolves: his escapades and adventures with his dear friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, his capture by the Monkey-People, his attempt at reintegration into human society, and his ultimate triumph over the lame tiger Shere Khan.

Rudyard Kipling’s classic story has thrilled generations of children and formed the basis for the unforgettable 1967 Disney movie.

Among the other classic stories included in this collection are Rikki-Tikki-Tavi about a mongoose who saves a family from a cobra, and Toomai of the Elephants about a young elephant handler.

The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling

About the Author Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Holds up over time. By Amazon Customer Kipling was smarter than most of his critics, especially his modern day critics. Reading the original texts is like a breath of fresh air. It's a children's book, so the characters are more archetypes, but they're still better than most of what's out there today.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Reed, Will Beautiful Illustrations. Richly written, with details and contexts unfamiliar to Western readers, "The Jungle Book" lifts imagination and language beautifully. Poetic, and written in a literary style, it shines above most modern prose.
