"[...] That there are persons in one section or another who seek to destroy the Union at all events, and are glad of any pretext to do it, I will neither affirm nor deny; but if there be such, I need address no word to them. To those, however, who really love the Union may I not speak? Before entering upon so grave a matter as the destruction of our national fabric, with all its benefits, its memories, and its hopes, would it not be wise to ascertain precisely why we do it? Will you hazard so desperate a step while there is any possibility that any portion of the ills you fly from have no real existence? Will you, while the certain ills you fly to are greater than all the real ones you fly from—will you risk the commission of so fearful a mistake? All profess to be content in the Union if all Constitutional rights can be maintained. Is it true, then, that any right, plainly written in the Constitution, has been denied? I think not. Happily the human mind is so constituted that no party can reach to the audacity of doing this. Think, if you can, of a single instance in which a plainly written provision of the Constitution has ever been denied. If by the mere force of numbers a majority should deprive a minority of any clearly written Constitutional right, it might, in a moral point of view, justify revolution—certainly would if such a right were a vital one. But such is not our[...]".

A Great Read, Lincoln Speaks to all Reasonable Men By A student of History Lincoln knew how his inaugural would be dissected and turned to label him an the abolitionist, his tact was clear - his duty was clear and precise to protect, defend and preserve the constitution as the people enacted. Beautiful logic, he laid out his position and set the tact for the country.

A plug nickel causes lame boy to flee to the country By Janice aboard Seaweed I downloaded this book because the author was listed (and recommended) in the back of a Horatio Alger book. On checking I see he wrote Toby Tyler (Circus book) and then went through other offerings to see what looked interesting. This one, with a woman in the title seemed like it might be okayIt's more than okay. The premise is a young boy of 11, with a lame leg (handicapped) is a newsboy in New York. One of his fellow newsies spots an advertisement looking for Seth with directions to appear in a lawyer's office. Seth cannot imagine why he's wanted. Then he looks through his pocket of change and realizes a lead nickel is gone.Spoilers follow:He's passed bad money and now the cops are after him!! That's the why, so he undertakes to leave the city. Friends help him get on a ferry to leave and advise him to find a spot in the country.Seth flees, with a small white puppy he loves above all else.Disappointment follows -- folks in the country call him a tramp! Finally he finds a home and spot with Aunt Hannah and her niece Gladys. Snip (the white dog) loves the country, chasing butterflies and more. Seth however is out of place and scared of a big cow. He's troubled by his conscience. Should he tell about being wanted by the lawyers for passing that bad nickel and be thrown out of the nicest home he's ever had or not? Aunt Hannah says prayers before every meal. The cow with long horns provides milk. (I'm not country but that seemed wrong!)There is danger (fire!) and Seth saves the day. Finally a newspaper article sets in motion the end of the book.I'm glad I read it and look forward to reading other James Otis books.

I've enjoyed several of Otis's books, and this is no exception. It is a lot shorter than a lot of his books. It's not quite a short story, but it's a quick read. I think that most children about ages 9 or 10 would enjoy it, but it's a nice book for adults, too.

First published in 1908, The Old Wives’ Tale is widely considered as one of Arnold Bennett's finest works.

The Old Wives' Tale tells the story of the Baines sisters, shy, retiring Constance and defiant, romantic Sophia, over the course of nearly half a century.

Bennett traces the sisters' lives from childhood in their father's drapery shop in provincial Bursley during the mid-Victorian era, through their married lives, to the modern industrial age, when they are reunited as old women.

The setting moves from the Five Towns of Staffordshire to exotic and cosmopolitan Paris, while the action moves from the subdued domestic routine of the Baines household to the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War.

This novel is part of Brilliance Audio's extensive Classic Collection, bringing you timeless masterpieces that you and your family are sure to love.

58 of 59 people found the following review helpful. The most remarkable book I've read in ages.... By Gwyn Gwyrdd I'm certainly not the only person in the world who thinks of this book as a masterpiece. The fact that H.G. Wells, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf all praise this book as being so is one of the reasons I picked it up. In spite of that, I really read it without set expectations.Briefly, to say what has already been said before, The Old Wives Tale is exactly that - a tale of three women who marry in very different circumstances. Mrs. Baines, the mother, is a life who is only briefly touched upon. However, the seperate lives of the two sisters, Sophia and Constance, are the crux of the book. Each life takes its' turn. We are first told about Constance, then about Sophia, and finally, about their reunion. Constance, whose name is not a coincidence, lives a simple provincial life, and Sophia, whose name also matches her persona, chooses romance and adventure. There is only one villain, and yet, he is perhaps the most powerful and chilling of all villains, Time. His grasping, clutching, suffocating presence is ever felt throughout the book, and looms even larger once that final page is turned. In the end, Sophia and Constance each pay the price for their choices, and the true cost of those choices is left for the reader to decide. As unique as we are, we will each believe something different about Sophia and Constance in the end, and that is precisely the point. To sum up the experience of The Old Wives Tale, a tale of three women living their lives, and their lives changing them (or perhaps not changing them, is that it is the most honest approach to human psychology I have ever read. The lives we read about, Mrs. Baines, Sophia, Constance, and even those who surround them, could be anyone's. In fact, most of us can find someone in this book we could point to and say "that's me". No character, no matter how brief their exit or entrance into this story, is insignificant. Each person gives us a fresh perspective on the human response to events and to, of course, other humans. The three main characters are presented with sheer, unsympathetic, yet respectful honesty. We are not introduced to inhuman, perfect, idealistic souls in this book. Nor are we looking through the eyes of the wicked. Instead, we are searching the souls of ordinary people and in the end, are left with a question about our own existence. In fact, it should be a large clue to readers when they see that the title of the fourth section is, What Life Is. It is here that something occurred which I totally unexpected, and it left me quite shaken - in fact, desperate. I found that I had been brought from the comfortable vantage point of observing these fictional lives, which are at times inexplicably amusing and heroic, to a sudden uncomfortable sensation that the characters were real and had turned toward me - the reader - begging the question "What of your life? What have you done with it? What have you accomplished?"That subtle change of vantage point was shocking, and ingenious. Without criticizing his own creation, the author was able to communicate the importance of living our lives to the fullest without telling us how. This fact alone shows great wisdom. Sophia and Constance experience remarkable things, no more remarkable than most people, but remarkable just the same. Each reacts differently because they are different, and each has a different idea about how to find happiness and how to deal with life's disappointments. Both are frequently of the opinion that they could improve someone else's life, yet have not found real satisfaction in their own. Each makes mistakes, and each perform the heroic. The author will on the same page be blunt about their faults and tender with their plight. He tells their story without judgement, and yet in the end, you feel you have read a very wise judgement on the nature of the human race. Here, reader, you will find no prescription for life, but a question that begs a diagnosis. The author makes it starkly clear that the remedy, or whether a remedy is even required, is up to you.The Old Wives Tale is not a dark story. It is not a comedy. It is not high adventure or mystery. In fact, it is many of these things put together to create something REAL. And it has shaken me to the core.

Constance, the good-natured older sister, grew up, married and raised a family all in the bonding accordance of social and familial expectation, while the beautiful Sophia's stubbornly independent streak propelled her to elope from her family, country and tradition into an utterly varied life. Both main characters are brilliantly etched inside and out, divulging both the beauty and frailty of human endeavor.

36 of 40 people found the following review helpful. What life is By R. Nemirow I read a 1911 hardback edition, with an Arnold Bennett's introduction which gave away a lot of the plot. In this review, I'll try not to make the mistake that Arnold Bennett made -- that may be the only mistake in the book. This is one of those rare books which feature people and places you know: the characters act -- not as you expect them to act -- but as real people do. And that's not all: this book -- with one of the dullest titles imaginable -- gives us a microcosm of life in the late nineteenth century but one which is connected to life in the 21st. It's recognizable, and yet it isn't. Threaded in this book are histories of marketing, mercantilism, urban developement, fashion, mass transit. They are presented in such a way that you can see how we ended up where we are.

Excerpt from The Travels of Marco PoloMarco Polo has been long regarded as at once the earliest and most distinguished of European travellers. He surpassed every other in the extent of the unknown regions which he visited, as well as in the amount of new and important information collected; having traversed Asia from one extremity to the other, including the elevated central regions, and those interior provinces of China from which foreigners have since been rigidly excluded. "He has," says Ritter, "been frequently called the Herodotus of the Middle Ages, and he has a just claim to that title. If the name of a discoverer of Asia were to be assigned to any person, nobody would better deserve it." The description of the Chinese court and empire, and of the adjacent countries, under the most powerful of the Asiatic dynasties, forms a grand historical picture not exhibited in any other record. His return along the southern coasts of the continent abounds also in curious and novel observations.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Marco Polo was the original Indiana Jones and then some. Please do not waste time on Gary Jennings' The Journeyer. This is the real deal and needs no dramatic embellishments. The Travels takes you on a trip from 13th century Venice to "Cathay" and back again. You will learn how Europeans found out about fireworks, paper currency, printing and pasta. The harrowing journey across the Gobi desert is particularly well reported. Marco Polo was more than an explorer. He was one of the world's first anthropologists. This is an exciting read, an account of how medieval Europe initially perceived China and the far east, and of how the Mongol rulers and Chinese emperors perceived them. Highly recommended. As to the print quality of the Penguin edition, I have had my copy since the early eighties and it has yellowed only slightly. Viking is now printing on acid-free paper. One must remember that these editions were printed primarily to reach the widest audience for the least amount of expense at the time. For years, Penguins were accessible to students and to the collector who couldn't afford an elaborate, fully illustrated, fully mapped volume of a particular work. I couldn't have read as many of them as I did in my late teens and early twenties if that were not the case. I owe a lifelong debt to the editors for their efforts. I've also never read a bad translation of any Penguin Classic.

68 of 69 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating and Enduring By Gianmarco Manzione This is a fascinating and timeless narrative for many reasons. On a somewhat superficial level, Polo's book is a must read for lovers of travel or adventure stories, as it reads like a great lost book of the Bible, rife with historic vengeance, heroic warriors, eccentric mystics, penultimate battles and rallying speeches that seem torn out of the best passages of Thucydides. Many of the practices and beliefs Polo witnessed -- specifically, polygamous peoples, perspectives on sexuality, methods of execution and the dazzling ways in which the people Polo came across attempted to please the gods and interpret the cosmos -- offer a memorable glimpse into a unique historical epoch. Particularly engrossing are the stories of violent tensions between Christian and Islamic sects in Polo's day and region. One gets a sense that not much has changed in the past 800 years as Polo details the struggles between the eastern and western world even then, many of which redound to financial issues (sound familiar?). Polo's insistence on portraying Moslems and Buddhists as savage rogues does make for a one-dimensional and distinctly Christian view of the world as it was in Polo's day, and his language is hardly the most attractive aspect of the book, which is written in a particularly conversational and redundant style. But the stories and characters contained within these pages are epic and unforgettable. I encourage lovers of Tolkein, C.S. Lewis and Rowling to read this book. Lovers of ancient history and philosophy are also bound to adore it. Most impressively, though, is the insight Polo offers into the birth of the now-infamous rift between the western and eastern worlds. This enduring relevance guarantees that we will be reading Polo's "Travels" for centuries to come.

However, if you plan to read this book strictly for enjoyment, then thumbtack your eyelids up. The translation is quite literal, bringing you the repetitive references, archaic descriptives, and provincial wherewithal of the time. It is brutal and requires every ounce of perserverence to read from cover to cover. I was in pain as I forced myself through countless redundancies in thickly worded prose that left me yearning to drop the book and set off on another. It was a battle to stay engaged. But, I finish the books I start and saw it through to the end. Knowledge was gleaned and that's a positive. However, the book is better employed as a reference. Godspeed, determined reader.

Four days after the declaration of war, an Indian corps of two infantry divisions and a cavalry brigade was ordered to embark for the Western Front. Clad in in tropical uniforms, those men endured one of the bitterest winters on record and fought in every major battle of the next two years. In a country they had never seen, against an enemy of whom they knew little, and in a cause that was not their own, they fought for the honor of their country and their regiments. This book draws upon a mass of unpublished sources and extensive interviews by the author in India and Nepal—it must be remembered that Gordon Corrigan (fluent in Nepali) was a commanding officer in the Brigade of Gurkhas.

Well Presented Account of the Indian Corps in WW1 By Aussie Reader This well researched and nicely presented book, by Gordon Corrigan, offers the reader an insightful and interesting account of the Indian Corps during the first year of the Great War. The book provides a detailed combat narrative of the period between 1914 - 1915 when the Indian Corps served on the Western Front. The author, who served in the British Army from 1962 to 1998, spent some time in command of a Gurkha unit and his love for these brave and resourceful soldiers shows in this account. The book is well written and covers a large range of material and subjects concerning the Indian units who served on the Western Front as part of the BEF until they were re-deployed to Mesopotamia in November 1915. Not only are the battles covered in detail but the make-up and performance of the Indian Corps is assessed and a number of myths and stories are clarified and laid to rest. The author takes the time to give you the background of the Indian Corps and how it was organized and recruited to function under much different circumstances than the attritional warfare of the Western Front. He then shows the problems encountered by the Indian Army on the Western Front due to it being raised, trained and equipped to fight skirmishes on the Indian frontiers and not a modern European war.At the end of the book you feel that the officers and men of the Indian Corps did an outstanding job during that first year of the Great War and that they might not have received the credit that they were due. That they had fought in every major British battle during that period and suffered horrendous casualties fighting in a country they knew little of and in a war that had nothing to do with them and still retained their loyalty and faith in the British Empire was quite amazing. The author has utilised a number of first-hand accounts throughout the narrative, which give you a small idea and feeling of the Indian troops fighting in France. A number of black & white photographs and detailed maps are provided throughout the book and are of a decent standard. Overall this is an excellent account covering a little known and sparsely written about aspect of the First World War. I am sure that any student or reader of this period of history will enjoy this book and will learn something new to take away after putting the book back on its shelf.

By Gary Hobin Corrigan's book offers readers an insight into the challenges faced by soldiers in the first year of the Great War. This is a battle narrative, and one previous reviewer faulted it as being "merely" a list of engagements. While that is true enough on the surface, Corrigan's text also details the efforts of soldiers to cope with the realities of combat conditions for which their training and experience had not prepared them. The British Army in 1914 was a small force of trained regulars whose missions had been fighting the small wars of the Empire. The Indian Corps -- consisting of regiments raised in or posted to British India -- was the only reinforcing formation immediately available. As a recent US Secretary of Defense noted, "you go to war with the army you've got," which is not necessarily the one you might have wanted. The British Army, including the Indian Corps, was not prepared for the conditions of warfare as they developed in northeast France. Nor, one must add, were any of the other combatants. Prepared for a war of maneuver, combatants found themselves fighting from trenches. The war that all sides assumed would be of short duration bogged down into virtual stalemate; combatants found themselves short of artillery ammunition, and without the types of weapons dictated by conditions on the Western Front. Corrigan's book provides a perspective on how one set of soldiers improvised both tools and techniques to deal with these unanticipated challenges. Yes, it is a battle narrative and there are exhaustive accounts of individual acts of heroism, of small unit actions, of regimental attacks that went nowhere. But this book has more to offer than tales of derring-do. Read it for insights of how our grandfathers' and great-grandfathers' generation coped with the reality of combat. One more note: I think the book would have been improved if the editors had added an appendix that detailed the rank structure of the British Indian regiments -- specifically relating rank titles to their relative equivalents in the British Army, for example. .

They were needed badly as the BEF was running out of soldiers at this early stage of WWI. They performed heroically. The problem was the different castes, ethnic groups, diets, cultures that made up the Indian Korps. Finally as English troops began arriving the Indian Korps was pulled out to the Middle East. Well written with stories of individual soldiers doings. Very funny story of the 5'2" Gurkha capturing several "Big" Germans in a house fight. He marched the Germans out, single file, with himself making up the rear, poking the last German in the butt with his bayonet. I had to laugh at this picture in my mind.

The premise behind this book is to shed some light on the FORGOTTEN HISTORY and ancient reverence for THE AFRIKAN/BLACK WOMAN, in hopes that she begin to see herself as divine (again). It is only through TRUE UNDERSTANDING that one is able to see with CLARITY. My message to the Afrikan Woman is, hold your head up, RECLAIM your historical role, and raise a NEW GENERATION of young men and women, boys and girls to APPRECIATE you for all that you have DONE and still DO! One of the most important aspects lost in the transition of development is, that deeper respect for the WOMAN, and this is one of many issues we as a people face today. I am very much aware of the EXTERNAL FORCES that made all of our current issues come to fruition, however, this cycle of IGNORANCE can be ERADICATED with the proper EDUCATION (not training) and knowledge of ONE’S SELF. Also, I hope that the men, can reflect back on the past as well and see for themselves that because of her, he truly exist. Not only that, she was his strength, they were a team, and a team can only win, by complimenting each other, assisting one other, building each other up and looking out for one another. The Afrikan woman has done so much for civilization, writing, math, agriculture, science, spirituality, and the list can go on. You are the house, and your comforting abilities and your nourishing skills are what makes the young, and those around you greater! It was not a myth that women were the true sources of power during the days of antiquity because if we look at the modern version of this concept, we still say that; “Behind every great man, there is a powerful woman!”

Respect That Woman: Only a Fool Would Limited Her! (Volume 1), by Truth Serum

About the Author Truth Serum is an alias taken by an author who strives for truthful understanding of past events that have effected the present. This has led the author on a quest for knowledge of self, and extreme mental liberation, which is usually hindered by gross indoctrination, not to mentioned the perpetuation of historical fallacies. Never being told of his true history, the author was intrigued at an early age when he stumbled across some information that was never taught in public school. From that day on, it has been a mission to bring this truth to others, so that they can experience mental resurrection as well. One of the authors favorites statements are; "I am not here to convince anyone of TRUE HISTORY or better yet, HISTORICAL REALITY (as it happened, and was told by others without equivocation), I would rather you do some deep research yourself, and I am sure, you will come to the same conclusion, thereafter!" With that being said, the author just lays out facts, and every book he produces always come with plenty of sources for the reader to continue where he left off! If the reader takes on this discipline, there will not be any misunderstandings between the reader and the authors literary work. History speaks for itself, and for too long, the the WORLD-VIEW of the western man has reigned supreme when it comes to telling the story of others. It helps if people would tell it like it happened, versus adding additional content to suit their world-view! This is the true premise behind African Centered Understanding. When looking at history with a telescopic lens, history, or the recalling of past events become much clearer!

Love & War: The World War II Letters of Arthur Smook is a gripping account of a love affair against the backdrop of war, and a fascinating first-person view of life in the Infantry. The story begins with Arthur’s joshing letters to Cornell pal Sylvia and turns to passion after they become engaged during a home leave. Sylvia visits the young Infantry 1st Lieutenant in Texas but they do not marry. He is shipped overseas in October 1944, fights in the Battle of the Bulge, and is one of the few in his unit to survive. Arthur writes passionate letters from the front, receives four purple hearts and a bronze star, and survives to command prisoner stockades as he waits to be returned to the states. His feelings and descriptions about all of these events are expressed in a manner that is always articulate and heartfelt: sometimes humorous, sometimes painful. Arthur Smook was caught up in the events of the era: Hitler's death, the Yalta Conference, the death of FDR, and the dropping of the atomic bomb in the context of an individual's wartime life. The letters interweave these historic moments with everyday life in foxholes and a longing to return to his love in a way that compels us to keep reading.

It is such an incredible book, that I am finding it difficult to choose the right words to describe it. Usually, when writing a review, I attempt, first of all, to consider what is the proper audience to recommend it to. I cannot do so for this book, because it should be read by every American, no matter what age or gender. If it’s a nonfiction book, such as this one, I try to consider whether it is as compelling as reading a novel. I cannot do it with this book, because it is more gripping than a novel. I simply could not put it down. The book consists entirely of the letters of Arthur Smook, followed by a stark, fascinating, and surprisingly satisfying time line where you learn what happened when Arthur returned home. The letters his beloved Sylvia wrote to him did not survive because Arthur was fighting in the most dangerous spots in Europe, and could not carry the letters with him, and so they were lost to us. It is heartbreaking to think what it cost him to lose them. Two of Sylvia’s letters to her parents remain, and from these letters you can see that this young woman deserved the deepest, most faithful, and enduring love that Arthur expressed to her in every single letter. These two young people were the perfect, classic example of what Americans used to be – honorable, courageous, willing to sacrifice and wait for their own happiness until their duty to their country was fulfilled. They were not conscious of their merit – Arthur’s letters are those of a modest, kind man who does not consider himself anything special despite four purple hearts and a bronze star. It’s just what he thinks he had to do.But the love expressed in these letters is not the whole thing. You go with Arthur through the history of the war in Europe. In his clear, humorous, intelligent writing, you see the Battle of the Bulge, the horrific life in the foxholes, the ruin of entire parts of Europe, the death of Hitler, the bombing of Hiroshima, the surprising relationships with the German prisoners of war whose camps Arthur had commanded later in the war, the frustrating red tape that made many soldiers wait so long before they could go home, and endless other day-to-day as well as historic events. All are told in a matter-of-fact way that makes you shake your head in disbelief and admiration.I could go on, but really, I can’t do justice to this book. You simply have to read it yourself. Personally, I mean to reread it. Most important, I would like to thank Diane Smook for giving us the opportunity to see into the heart and soul of a wonderful human being. I sincerely hope that his life was as wonderful and rewarding as he expected to have with his Sylvia.

Wark Diane Smook has lovingly, and painstakingly transcribed her father's letters to his future wife Sylvia written while he was a soldier fighting overseas during WWII. Arthur Smook gives us a glimpse into the personal, social history of a huge historic event. The report of one of many, many characters who took part in this world changing time. His letters are thoughtful and tender. Ms. Smook has not only created a personal album for her family to treasure, but one for anyone who is interested in our history - people on this planet; as well as anyone interested in the power of love to help people prevail under challenging circumstances.

By Bike along the Camino Portugués describes a journey from Lisbon to Santiago in the Spring of 2015 following the course of the medieval Camino Portugués. The journey was undertaken on a folding bike and the author stayed in various types of accommodation along the way. The author sought out interesting churches, towns and historical places including a number of Roman sites from the first to the fourth centuries. Portugal is a fascinating place to visit and travel through and the use of a bike brought the author into close and leisurely contact with the country and its institutions. The book is plentifully illustrated with colour photos of things and places encountered.

Lawrence is better known for his various novels, i.e., Women in Love; Lady Chatterly's Lover; and Sons and Lovers than for his travel writing. With that said, I highly recommend this book. Personally I love Lawrence's writing style and this particular book is exceptional even for Lawrence. You will feel as though you are there with him experiencing the moment he is describing. The people and places of Italy come alive through his prose. His writing moves, at times, from reality and physical descriptions to abstraction and philosophy, but it is so wonderfully written, you will cherish every word and never question the move from one to the other. Images abound in this work and the scenes he describes are beautifully sensual. I have read this work twice and plan on reading it numerous other times throughout my life.

Lawrence writes poetically--never mind the sportswriters' rule against repeating the same word in a sentence ("Angels," "Seraphs," "Halos")--this author uses "dark" numerous times in a single paragraph. I felt as though I were in northern Italy with him. Incredible. Also recommended are his other travel works, such as Sea and Sardinia and Mornings in Mexico.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. One of the greatst travel books ever written By Jamie Much is said of D.H. Lawrence's fiction, but we've mostly forgotten about his amazing travel writing. Twilight in Italy takes us on a foot tour of the Alps all the way down into the verdant gardens and sun soaked plaza's of Italy. Lawrence, as always, finds small stories here and there that not only share a sense of place but also relate the experience of a real traveler. If you are a fan of Paul Theroux or Pico Iyer you will immediately feel at home with this book.

Lonely Planet's Beautiful World contains intriguing photographs of lush, gorgeous landscapes from all over the world, in a coffee table book that individuals and families are sure to enjoy, whether they travel or not. I was kind of disappointed with the lack of text to go with some of the pictures, but it didn't detract from the beauty of the book overall. If you are a traveler, or even if you just enjoy living vicariously, then this is one book that I highly recommend.

Their "The Travel Book" was so well done that I bought both versions (they revised and updated the original) and enjoyed reading them cover to cover. This book is not of that caliber. First, the oddity of the physical assembly: instead of a regular dust jacket, which covers the entire cloth binding, they chose to put a 3/4 dust jacket. Naturally, the first thing I did was pull it off to see if there was a problem with it. No problem, it was intentional. When you pull it off and unfold it, you find more photographs on the inside of it. But since this book is unlikely to be purchased by a teenager looking for posters, I don't see the point to this gimmick. Also, because it's folded, it would make a bad poster anyway with the creases.More troubling is the artistic or editorial assembly. The photos are supposedly in order by theme, such as Untamed, Transformation, and Harmony. I didn't find all the photos in each section to be especially true to its theme, and there was a bit of jarring disconnect among some placements. For example, a photo of a cemetery in Mexico and the opposite photo of an albatross nesting site? A sardine run following a mob scene during a religious holiday? (That actually seemed a bit insulting, but maybe that was just me).Worst, from my point of view, is that there is practically no text. A terse fragment of a line barely identifies the photo. There's an index at the back with more information - a tiny paragraph - but this is an oversized, heavy book, a typical coffee table size, and who wants to be flipping back and forth to find out information that should have been presented with the photo? On the other hand, most of the photos are beautiful. Not necessarily as good as National Geographic, but certainly bright, large, and often inspiring. I just think this could have been a much better book, with different organization and more text. I received it through the Vine program and honestly wouldn't buy it for myself the way I did with Lonely Planet's other books, but you might consider it a nice gift for friends who like to travel or who are armchair travelers.

By OLT This is a big ol' picture book (14" x 10.5") with spectacular photographs. The only words to be found are in the introductory page and the teeny-tiny identification of each photograph at the bottom or top of the pages. Now, whoever assembled this array of photographs had as the lofty goal to create a "context" for the photographs by arranging the images "in chapters that reflect an aspect of life. As you turn the pages [they] hope that pondering the relationship between each image and the life stage with which it's been connected will add another dimension to your experience."Oh, help! Dense me couldn't quite figure it all out and ended up with a dimensionless experience. But, hey! The photographs are beautiful. I like to just open the book at random and ooh and ah over what I'm seeing. It's just that, for example, in the chapter "Space" I fail to see the interconnection of Lighthouse Reef in Belize, Milford Sound in New Zealand, Hammerhead sharks in Ecuador, Migrating buffalo in Botswana, Bracken Cave in Texas and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong. Not that I'm complaining. The photos are lovely. Here's another example of how I fail to understand the groupings or chapters of photos. Why are photos of a sardine run in South Africa and Humpback whales in Alaska in the chapter "Nourish", the Great White shark of Mexico in "Untamed", Green turtles of Ecuador in "Community", another South African sardine run in "Celebration", Hammerhead sharks of Ecuador in "Space" and the Australian whale shark in "Monumental"? Stupid me would have all those photographs in the same section. So I'm a bit dense, very literal-minded, lacking in imagination and can't understand the choices of photographs for each chapter. That doesn't stop me from loving the photographs. It's a lovely coffee table book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Too Cheerful By hereswhatithink I read Signa and Bebee and enjoyed them immensely. This story just didn't work for me. The overall tone is so depressing it makes Les Miserables or Tess of the D'Urbervilles feel like Pollyanna.I don't mind some darkness if there's a glimmer of hope, but this isn't that kind of story. I counted one sympathetic character, a cripple and outcast who dies soon after his introduction. Other than him, they are to the last man, woman and child either downright evil or soul-destroyingly indifferent.I'm the first to admit that understanding allegory is not my strong suite. And this book is rich with them. To a more intellectual mind, I can imagine its worth. But unfortunately, I was blinded by the misery. If there was a moral to this, the only two I took home were that "evil always conquers good" and "there is no God but gold". Not very cheerful. In a nutshell: a fatherless child (read: spawn of the devil) is brought up as a slave to her evil grandfather and abused by him and every other person she meets. She eventually comes upon a painter starving to death in a tower and comes to his aid. She falls in love with him but he is only in love with his art...I have a Goodreads friend who adores this book (Its his favorite Ouida) and I'm so reluctant to say anything against it. But my fragile emotions couldn't handle this. Thankfully, there are plenty of other Ouidas for me to choose from.CONTENT: PG
