Bassett I first saw this on a list of "great mystery novels" by a fan who's particularly knowledgeable about very early detective fiction. One of the great things about the ebook revolution is that titles like this, which in earlier years would've been almost impossible to find, are now free and easily available to anyone with a Kindle. This is an attempt to write a big classic detective novel, and it mostly works. There is an eccentric detective, a crime, suspects and deduction. There is also the requisite melodrama from this era, with a damsel in distress, a somewhat thick hero, a sneering villain and a devilish plan. Still, Moffett rings some interesting and very current changes with this device -- the notion, for instance, that the villain is protected by the top men in government, or the notion that the villain and the hero share a kind of spiritual bond. Clearly there is nothing new under the sun.A man is shot in a private room of an elite French restaurant. At first it looks like suicide, but France's greatest detective is sure it's not, it's murder, and committed by a Great Villain, the man to whom he should finally match his wits. There were parts of this where I was absolutely sure I was reading a classic. The first extended bit of detection, for instance, or the first fight scene, are as good as it got in the genre at that time, and far better than some more heralded titles. Unfortunately there are parts of this that are very dated (a lot of the melodrama is over the top, even for this time) and, like many books of this era, Moffett wasn't quite sure how to keep the suspense going at the 3/4 mark. On the other hand, allowing for the treacle, there are some great moments even in the second half of the book, particularly where the villain and hero talk.Instead of a classic I would call this a near-miss -- it's weaknesses are too noticeable to be overlooked, but the good stuff here is extremely good indeed. It certainly bears rediscovery, this is easily the equal of most of Edgar Wallace's stuff, for instance, and Wallace was never as ambitious as Moffett.

If you keep mind the culture when this book is written, the book is a great mystery read. I am going to read more of Moffett's books due to the fact I loved this book.In some part,s just like on TV today, you know somehow the hero wins but it was fun going from defeat to the ultimate victory. If you like reading mysteries for the fun of it. You should read this one.

Surprisingly absorbing adventure By Khirul I do not usually like the perfect master detective and perfect master villain genre, nor the mystical intervention genre. But the writing here is strong enough to carry you on through the twists and turns of plot, despite these objections.

No. 1 Bestseller in Travel in Africa. When Cinda decides to visit her identical twin, Linda, and family in Northern Uganda, little does she know they will soon be running for their lives. How did a relaxing vacation result in a terrifying escape from artillery and automatic gunfire? The answer begins four decades earlier when their parents and family of five children leave everything familiar in America to start life as medical missionaries in rural East Africa. Three generations of a family’s love, forged by shared faith, struggles, and triumphs, serve them now as they fight for survival. REVIEWS: “Brilliant writing, a heart-stopping adventure, and unforgettable characters make "Heartprints of Africa" a keeper!” —Catherine Palmer, Christy Award-winning author of "A Touch of Betrayal" and 57 other novels. "Sizzles with the sights, sounds, and smells of her African childhood in the 1960s juxtaposed with a perilous return to that world as an adult. Reading "Heartprints of Africa" is an immersive experience, one that will not be easily forgotten." —Rita Gardner, author of "The Coconut Latitudes." "Fascinating look at the life of a missionary family in East Africa. I loved reading about the author's swashbuckling, fearless missionary father and his remarkably capable wife as they set off with their five young children for a new life at a mission hospital in East Africa. Very well written, well edited and impeccably formatted and certainly worthy of 5 stars." —Susie Kelly, author of "I Wish I Could Say I Was Sorry", No. 1 Bestseller in African Travel. A beautifully written memoir that powerfully immerses the reader in the author's life in Africa, both as a child and as an adult. Nail-biting at times, humorous at others, it is a heart-warming account of one family's love, faith, and struggles and I look forward to a sequel from this talented author. —Jacky Donovan, author of best-selling "Simon Ships Out: How One Brave, Stray Cat Became a Worldwide Hero"

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Read it, you won't be disappointed. By Deanna Brown Having grown up in a similar time and place, I was struck by the author’s thoroughness in describing her experiences. From the first impressions of a five year old girl in a strange new land, to the struggles of saying goodbye to a country that has left a permanent mark on her heart, I felt own heart saying “yes, exactly!” Brooks has managed to describe the grime, flies, perils and difficulties of a wild land in perfect balance with the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, wildlife, and people.I appreciated her ability to speak frankly about the struggles and conflicts that come with family life under the stress of many inconveniences, illnesses and cultural adjustment, while showing honor and respect for her parents and siblings. Even as she describes the most difficult and heart wrenching experiences, she does so with a forgiving and an understanding heart. This book resonated so strongly with my own African experience, that I found myself thinking, “The next time someone asks me what it was like to grow up in Africa, I am just going to tell him to read this book.” If that was all that was accomplished, it would have been enough for me.But that isn’t all! The adventures of the author’s childhood are tied together with a nail-biting account of a modern day evacuation from political upheaval in rural Uganda. Interspersed in this intense narration are humorous interludes and observations, along with the beautiful story of the connectedness of twins. All this is tied up in a lovely packaged of the author’s description of heartprints, “life experiences, victories, struggles, and wounds are their ridges and valleys”. This theme is carried out in the book to help the reader contemplate how our past experiences inform our present decisions. One of the best memoirs I have read. Looking forward to seeing what will come next for this author.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A vivid portrait of an extraordinary life By Rita M. Gardner Cinda Adams Brooks’ memoir sizzles with the sights, sounds, and smells of her African childhood in the 1960s juxtaposed with a perilous return to that world as an adult. Brooks describes living in a place where the local greeting translates into “Are you alive?” – a logical question in a land where a life’s focus is on survival. She writes matter-of-factly of nights punctuated by “the cough and deep resonating roar” of lions and a vast orchestra of other beasts. Her descriptions of local delicacies including a Masai cocktail (involving cow blood), warthog fajitas and fried grasshoppers bring them to life in a most visceral way. Throughout her story, her parents’ sense of duty and love for their children provide an environment of safety in an unsafe land. Her mother’s motto of “doing what we have to do” is an echoing theme, and becomes a critical mantra in the Uganda of 2004 as the adult Cinda finds herself and her family members unexpectedly running for their lives. Reading “Heartprints of Africa” is an immersive experience, one that will not be easily forgotten.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It will touch your heart! By Cat I have seen too many fiction and non-fiction "reviews" and reviewers that unfairly reveal major plots points and secrets. (A "review" is NOT a "Synopsis") Authors work so diligently to build to these big reveals and an insensitive reviewer spills the beans ... WELL, it ain't happening this time! I am NOT going to deprive the reader of the thrill of discovery, the adrenaline rushes, the gut-clinching terror, the outrageous giggles, and the incredible LOVE that is to be discovered in the pages of "Heartprints of Africa"!The author paints vibrant vistas and experiences with her words, one can truly imagine relaxing on the cool porch, morning light growing as one sips sweet chai tea. Or trying to sleep with lions roaring or artillery explosions not so far away. Gracefully and effortlessly the tome flows back and forth, a gentle ebb and flow that spans 40 years. The gossamer threads of thought, emotions, and experiences weave together in a beautiful tapestry of Life. The craftsmanship is exquisite! The voice change is incredible ... seeing and hearing the impressions and perceptions of a 5-year-old, then that voice matures through time and experiences of life. Tight bonds of Love, Family, and Faith grow even stronger through the challenging times and wondrous adventures. It is ingeniously embellished by excerpts from the beautifully detailed letters written by Martha(Mother) and John(Daddy) ...Absolutely Masterful!I have read the book twice and am on my third reading (something I just don't do) .. and the discoveries keep coming!!!!This is Volume 1 .... Can't wait for Volume 2!

Heins Sieur de la Tournoire leaves the country to visit Paris. He is a 21-year old Huguenot, so he anticipates that he will not be welcomed with open arms by the court of Henry III. Nonetheless, he manages to join the French Guard.de la Tournoire is interested in Mlle. D'Arency, who asks him to kill De Noyard for her. Naturally he refuses. Mlle. D'Arency conspires with Queen Catherine De Medici to trick him into the task. This makes an enemy of the Duke of Guise, so de la Tournoire is inadvertently caught in the queen's conspiracy. The King's sister, Marguerite, hides him from Catherine's machinations and sends him on a mission to her husband, Henri of Navarre. Henri makes him a Captain in his guards, where he flourishes. His adventures include assisting Mlle. De Varion in rescuing her father from prison--her father was imprisoned for sheltering Huguenots. This Renaissance adventure has the same qualities as an Alexandre Dumas novel and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys old-fashioned adventure tales.

In choosing a few typical cases which illustrate the remarkable mental qualities of my friend, Sherlock Holmes, I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to select those which presented the minimum of sensationalism, while offering a fair field for his talents.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Gruesome Packet By Scrapple8 `The Adventure of the Cardboard Box' was written in 1893, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle left this case out of many versions of the second collection of cases of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.Holmes is called on the case by Inspector Lestrade, who was contacted by Susan Cushing because she received a gruesome packet in the mail. Ironically, it was not the gruesome nature of the packet but the inference behind the crime that made this case controversial.Doyle hinted at adultery early on in the case, when Sherlock Holmes used a painting of Henry Ward Beecher to deduce the thoughts of Dr. Watson. Beecher was the pastor of the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights who was involved in a highly publicized trial for adultery in 1875. Beecher was also a notable abolitionist whose sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.Readers may notice the same anecdote in `The Resident Patient' of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. The original version of The Resident Patient published in Strand did not contain the Gordon/Beecher anecdote. When Doyle decided that the Cardboard Box was too controversial for younger readers, he omitted the case in The Memoirs and wove the anecdote into the version of 'The Resident Patient' that was published in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.Holmes used the tarred twine and knot used to secure the package, as well as the course salt used as filler, to deduce the nature of the criminal. There was also something in the profile of Susan Cushing, the lady who received the gruesome packet, which helped Holmes discover a detail regarding the contents of that package. The inference of adultery becomes clear when one reads the testimony of Jim Browner to Inspector Montgomery, furnished at the end of the case. `The Cardboard Box' is the second case of the eight cases published in His Last Bow, a collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories published in 1917.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not one of my favorite of Doyle's by still very good. By T. Hindes One of the more quicker tales delving into the inner workings of the mind of man. Sad tale of how jealousy and drink can lead to the downfall of not only the drinker, but those around him. Also touches into you get more than you bargain for sometimes when you interfere in the lives of others. A dark tale without getting to gruesome, a classic tale well worth reading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Solid Holmes story By morehumanthanhuman If you have the The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, you already have this 1892 story. It's an enjoyable short story involving a woman who receives a mystery package containing two ears. Whose ears are they? Why were they sent to this particular woman? Who sent them? It's all for Holmes to figure out (with assistance from Watson).

Much Ado About Nothing is a comedic play by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in 1598 and 1599, as Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career. The play was included in the First Folio, published in 1623. Much Ado About Nothing is generally considered one of Shakespeare's best comedies, because it combines elements of robust hilarity with more serious meditations on honor, shame, and court politics. By means of "noting" (which, in Shakespeare's day, sounded the same as "nothing," and which is gossip, rumour, and overhearing), Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar on the erroneous belief that she has been unfaithful. At the end, Benedick and Beatrice join forces to set things right, and the others join in a dance celebrating the marriages of the two couples.

Review `'The annotation is generally superb...Especially outstanding is the section [in the Introduction] on the play in performance. There are 21 captivating illustrations. This edition shows the result of much original research and it is recommended unreservedly.'' Year's Work in English Studies

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. great tool By Sharon Madar The "No Fear Shakespeare" books are so much help. I am terrible with understanding old-english and this book makes it an easy-read with helpful hints when the author attempts so allude to something most audiences don't know.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. useful, but... By mercuryval I am leaving a review of this version of the play rather than critiquing the play itself:The side-by-side text is useful. I am an English teacher and bought this version partly to see what my students have "read," as the book features a side-by-side of Shakespeare's original along with the modernized Sparknotes version, which all my students seem to read online. The little footnotes are helpful in adding depth to our understanding of the play, though academic texts add far more footnotes. The thing that bothered me the most is that the original Shakespeare version, where I do all my annotating, is bordered by a very thick black line, which gets in the way of my annotations. Not sure why they put that there. As for the play itself, it's a typical Shakespearean romantic comedy where everyone ends up in the woods, etc. It's among his easier works to understand, so this play (and this version) works well for students.

By A Customer This map has a list price of $8.95 that Amazon is selling for $11.95 and is a "hard to find" product that can be bought any B&N store or on the web at several sites that sell maps for NO MORE than the $8.95 list price. All the maps in this series are excellent products and valuable if traveling in France.

GPS is not for me. I like to know where I am, not just when to turn. If you are careful to fold the map along its original creases for storage, the same map can be used for many trips. Plus, the detailed maps of attractions in the green books are easily linked with the large fold out maps.

71 of 78 people found the following review helpful. A tale of awakening By NotATameLion All of the stories in C.S. Lewis' excellent Chronicles of Narnia series are told in distinctly different ways. Prince Caspian could justifiably be said to be like an epic poem told in prose. It shares many qualities with other epics; most notably its beginning coming in the middle of the action. Prince Caspian, like other epics, contains a climactic battle. However, Prince Caspian (like all great epics) is not simply a book about battles. The great themes of Prince Caspian are those of awakenings, renewal and restoration. As the book opens, the Pevensie children (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) are suddenly called back to the magical land of Narnia from a British rail station. They return to find that the land of Narnia is suffering from the oppression of the evil Telmarine King Miraz who rules with an iron fist. The king's nephew, (and son of the murdered rightful king) Caspian, has discovered the truth about Narnia and has fled the palace in fear of his life. In his flight, Caspian encounters some "old Narnians" who used to live freely before the Telmarines came to rule Narnia. Under the Telmarines, the old Narnians have been facing extermination. After initial mistrust, the old Narnians agree to stand with Caspian in an attempt to reclaim his rightful throne from his uncle and to save those that are left of the old Narnians from certain death. A struggle then ensues. It is in the middle of this struggle that the Pevensies are called back to Narnia, where they once ruled as Kings and Queens. They encounter Caspian's loyal friend Trumpkin the dwarf. Trumpkin relates Caspian's story to them. The children agree to help Caspian. Together, the dwarf and the children set off to come to Caspian's aid.It is on this journey that the Pevensies and Trumpkin learn the old lesson that "The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps." (Proverbs 16:9) Forced to take a different route back to Caspian's camp than the one Trumpkin took from it, the children and the dwarf become confused and lost. They strive to the utmost limits of their human strength and find that it is not enough. It is in the darkest hour of this struggle that Lucy thinks she sees something on the horizon...a Lion. What follows is a test of Faith for all involved. Lucy, being the youngest of the children and possessing the most "child-like" faith, overcomes her doubts. She is then visited by the Great Lion Himself, Aslan (Lewis' allegorical representation of Jesus). In one of my favorite scenes in all of the Narnia books, Aslan and Lucy discuss the lack of faith shown by the others and what must be done:"Now child," said Aslan, when they had left the trees behind them, "I will wait here. Go and wake the others and tell them to follow. If they will not, then you at least must follow me alone."This piece of dialogue is one of the reasons why Lewis is one of my favorite authors. In the span of three sentences in a children's book, Lewis captures the essence of Christ's universal call to be His disciples. Another amazing thing about Lewis (and another reason why he's a favorite author of mine)...is that the book grows progressively more spellbinding and instructive from that point in the story on. Prince Caspian is, like many of Lewis' books, a whole education crammed into a tiny little package--all told in a warm and humorous way. I encourage you to get a copy today. Then read it. There is a lot to be learned from this book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Hundreds of Years Have Passed Since the Pevensies Visited Narnia... By Amazon Customer PRINCE CASPIAN, the 4th book in C.S. Lewis' THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA series and the 2nd one published, continues the adventures of the Pevensie children in Narnia. The story opens with Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy waiting at the train station to return to boarding school for the year where they are yanked by magic onto the shores of a strange forested island.Time, one must remember, does not move the same way in Narnia as it does in the real world; the Pevensies could spend 100 years in Narnia and return to reality to find that no time at all has passed. It turns out that hundreds of Narnian years have passed during the year that the children have been away and the Narnian world has been thrown into chaos -- the animals no longer speak; a new line of kings govern the land with a harsh scepter; the oceans have risen and the landscapes changed; the people have forgotten the ways of the old line of kings; and the stories of the old Narnia have been forbidden to be told. Beyond that, it seems forever since the last time the great lion, King Aslan, has been seen at all, and his existence has been dismissed by most as mere silly legend. This installment of the series pales only slightly to THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. The story of our four Narnian protagonists shows us once again that their identities in Aslan's Kingdom have nothing to do with what they do and everything to do with who(se) they are. Lucy is faced with the toughest decisions this time around, as she is asked to choose whether she will follow Aslan even if the people closest to her consider her crazy for doing so. I am struck again by the ease of C.S. Lewis' storytelling voice. While he may not deliver the most complex plots or character arcs, the tone and pacing of his language makes me wish I were a child again and could sit in front of the hearth and listen to his stories aloud.--- Reviewed by Jonathan Stephens

Magical things happen and adventures begin. Four kids, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, are returning to boarding school when something stange happens. They are summoned from the dreary train station to return to the land of Narnia. Narnia is the land where they had ruled as kings and queens and where they were desperately needed. I think that this book is a great book for all ages. If you like adventure books then you will love this book. Exciting things happen all the time and the book makes you keep guessing about what's going to happen next. I have only read 3 books by C.S. Lewis, but I know I'll be reading many more. C.S. Lewis, the author of this book, wrote a seven book series, and Prince Of Caspian is one of the books. Everyone of his books enter you into enchanted world where anything is possible to happen. That's one of the reasons why I liked this book.By:Lindsay
