"[...]grant us their approbation. If we hear it said, that our frankness may have been useful to our country, this success will be, at once, our justification and our recompence. We have questioned, concerning the nautical details, several gentlemen of the navy who were on board; we confess, however, that on comparing their accounts, we have observed that they did not always entirely agree; but we have taken those facts which had the most witnesses in their favour. We shall be sometimes obliged to record cruel truths; they will, however, be directed only to those, whose unskilfulness, or pusillanimity have caused these dreadful events. The Captain of the Medusa,de Chaumareys was a political appointee. Incompetent and nervous, the Captain relied on the advice of a passenger rather than his officers. He thus ran aground 50 miles off the African coast with over 500 passengers aboard. Disdaining any reasonable plan, he then evacuated the boat rather than ferry the passengers to shore. The Medusa was short lifeboats for about 150 of the men on board, so he ordered a raft built. This book is written by one of the fifteen survivors of that raft journey.

Excerpt from What I Saw in California: Being the Journal of a Tour, by the Emigrant Route and South Pass of the Rocky Mountains, Across the Continent of North America, the Great Desert Basin, and Through California, in the Years 1846, 1847In the succeeding pages, the author has endeavored to furnish a faithful sketch of the country through which he travelled - its capabilities, scenery, and population. He has carefully avoided such embellishment as would tend to impress the reader with a false or incorrect idea of what he saw and describes. He has invented nothing to make his narrative more dramatic and amusing than the truth may render it. His design has been to furnish a volume, entertaining and instructive to the general reader, and reliable and useful to the traveller and emigrant to the Pacific. If he has succeeded in this, it is as much as he can hope. The facts in reference to those military and naval operations in California which did not come under his personal observation, have been derived from authentic sources.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Bryant's book is an excellent book, written in a journal format, detailing his trip from Independence, MO to New Helvetia (now Sacramento). The privations and tribulations of the journey are enough to make today's folks wonder if we would be made of such stern stuff as these old pioneers. And then, he just happens into the 1846 -1847 war with Mexico which liberated California to eventually become a state! Great insight into early California history and as to where so many of the town and place names originated.

The narrator of this timeless adventure story is the lad, Jim Hawkins, whose mother keeps the Admiral Benbow, an inn on the west coast of England in the 18th century. An old buccaneer takes up residence at the inn. He has in his sea chest a map to the hiding place of Captain Flint's treasure. A gang of cutthroats are determined to get his treasure map, and - led by the sinister, blind pirate, Pew - descend on the inn. But Jim Hawkins outwits them, grabs the map, and delivers it to Squire Trelawney. The Squire and his friend Dr. Livessy set off for Treasure Island in the schooner Hispaniola, taking Jim with them. Some of the crew are the squire's faithful servants, but the majority are buccaneers recruited by the one-legged pirate, Long John Silver. Jim discovers the pirates' plan to seize the ship and kill the squire's party, but warns them in time. After a series of thrilling fights and adventures, the pirates are finally defeated, and the treasure secured with the help of marooned pirate, Ben Gunn.

Amazon.com Review Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic. --Naomi Gesinger

From School Library Journal Grade 6-10-- The striking jacket of this new edition of an old classic promises more than it delivers. Thirty-one plates, full-color but predominantly in earth-tone hues, are dropped into the text, sometimes mindlessly. For example, the cover art, a pirate digging in sand among pieces of eight, reappears on page 61, facing text that sketches the lives of pirates, "gentlemen of fortune." The text never relates to the art. Ingpen's style is impressionistic but evocative of N. C. Wyeth's illustrations for the same title (Scribners, 1911, reissued by Time Warner, 1992); his plate of Blind Pow shows the subject in much the same pose. In some paintings, Ingpen uses angle and perspective effectively; interest is added by superimposing people upon background, or vice-versa. Spot line drawings, some used more than once, accent many pages. Unfortunately, in some cases, a subject is not recognizable from one page to the next, and the hazy impressionistic style makes it difficult to interpret some pictures. Although superficially handsome, this title has stiff competition from many other editions of Treasure Island , the Wyeth edition, especially. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MACopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 5-9. This is one of the best in the picture-book-size Scribner Storybook Classic series. True to the spirit of Stevenson's timeless novel, Timothy Meis' abridged retelling captures the bloody action of mutiny on the high seas and the cutthroat quest for hidden treasure. The story is told through the eyes of brave cabin boy Jim, who fights off the murderous pirates and bonds with their one-legged leader, Long John Silver. Wyeth's thrilling, handsomely reproduced paintings, originally done in 1911, will attract a variety of readers, including some older high-schoolers. In dark shades of brown and red, the pictures focus on the grim, exciting struggle on board the ship and on the island. At the same time, there's a burning golden glow in the background of almost every scene, keeping readers in mind of the treasure that drives the wild action. The most unforgettable painting--and one of Wyeth's most famous--is the melancholy scene of Jim leaving home as his mother weeps in the background. It's the elemental adventure. That said, I love the Classic Start series as a mother who believes in introducing my children to the classics from a very early age. I began using the series with my daughter when she was five. We have read Black Beauty, The Little Princess, Heidi, and Pollyanna to name a few, so I am very familiar with the content of the series, and I keep coming back for more.My son just turned six. There is no way that he would be able to sit through nor understand the original, but with this abridged version, he not only becomes familiar with the story, he falls in love with it as well. We began reading Treasure Island last night, and he begged for more and more. Finally, after six chapters I insisted that I needed to read to his older sister. While I did, this little kindegartner slugged through another chapter, struggling over every word to try to get more of the story. I couldn't have been more thrilled; that is the love of reading and the love of good literature with which I am trying to bless my children.Classic Starts are a fantastic way to begin, in my opinion. I see no difference between a beginning pianist first learning an easy version of a classical piano concerto and a young reader first introduced to an abridged version of a classic that, in it's original form would be above both his context and vocabulary level. I am sure that when my son does encounter the original, and he will--I'll make sure of that--he will not only be more ready, he will be more excited to get the rest of the story, thanks to his familiarity with and fondness for Billy Bones, Jim, and Long John Silver. My thanks, Classic Starts.

By Bob Hoskins Please note: Treasure IslandThis title is heavily abridged and aimed at children but, the Amazon title doesn't tell you this. From the inside cover of the book:"This Great classic for Children by Dalmation press has been carefully condensed and adapted from the original version ... We kept the well-known phrases for you. We kept the author's style. And we kept the important imagery and heart of the tale."With its large font and many illustrations the book comes out to 181 pages; whereas, the Sterling Classic unabridged with its regular sized font and no illustrations comes out to 232 pages. This gives an indication of how condensed this version is.This one has its place as a kids version and should be clearly marked as such.

Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.Jim Hawkins is the hero of the story and he's a good lad with a stout heart. Long John Silver is the real star, however, and his character is a fascinating character study in moral ambiguity... or perhaps a study in amoral perfection. The pirate language is good and thick but this edition has plenty of notes to help you decipher some of the references that have become too obscure for today's readers. The plot moves along very briskly with no wasted scenes. In short, Treasure Island well deserves its status as a beloved classic. It's a story of suspense and adventure that can be enjoyed at a child's level, but has substance for adults as well. I would recommend without reserve it to virtually anyone.

Even if after you read this, you find backpacking is not the way for you and you would rather be a glampacker, you still get many tips and tricks to make your travel much easier. Especially when making multiple stops, you don't want to be lugging multiple heavy bags through airports you're not familiar with, on trains and in and out of taxis. The book also highlights destinations where you can travel on the cheap and get an even more amazing cultural experience than those spending significantly more than you in the popular tourist towns. I think Thailand was just added to my bucket list :)

It's actually my first time to hear the word glampacker and my dictionary didn't even had that word registered. Well as this book tells so glampacker is a short form for a glamorous packer- bringing unimportant things and staying on a hotel for a comfort rather than in local house or a camp site. Admittedly, I am like that. I always make sure I have money on my pocket for a glamorous trip. Now I wanna travel for 3 months and I want to experience a real adventure and so I bought this book.I'm very satisfied with the information I've gathered. Sorting out important things to carry is the most challenging part for me and I'm so glad the author listed it all. The latter part of this book gave wonderful tips when planning to go to countries in asia and europe. Overall, I never had a second thought of giving this book a five. It is well recommended.

I tend to pack a lot of items for style and I’ve learnt that I am a glampacker. This book gave me information about how to pack which helped me in my glampacking issues. The author made this an easy read and provided us with tips for packing. You don’t have to be a backpacking to employ these tips. It not only tackles packing but gives you tips on choosing a destination. I recommend this book for beginner backpackers or even regular travelers.

Best Ebook Chasing the Mountain of Light: Across India on the Trail of the Koh-i-Noor Diamond, by Kevin Rushby

The Koh-i-Noor diamond known as the Mountain of Light, the world's largest diamond, was found in India, traveled from Golconda to the Mughal palaces in the north. Fought over, cursed at and occasionally lost, it finally reached the Sikhs in the Punjab, only to be seized by British agents eager to please young Queen Victoria. It now lies in the Tower of London where some say its curse controls the fate of the Windsor family. In Chasing the Mountain of Light, Kevin Rushby pursues the dramatic career of the Koh-i-Noor on a journey to the heart of Indian culture meeting dealers, smugglers, and petty crooks along the way. It's another adventure from Rushby whom the Washington Post recently compared to William S. Burroughs and Arthur Rimbaud.

Chasing the Mountain of Light: Across India on the Trail of the Koh-i-Noor Diamond, by Kevin Rushby

Amazon.com Review A shiny piece of carbon is what ensnares writer Kevin Rushby, luring him into a strange world of hidden towns with no names, a land of charms, chakras, cardamom, and missing gem mines. But it's not just any chunk of glittering jewel with which Rushby is obsessed: he's pursuing the history of the Koh-I-Noor diamond, a 106-karat piece of crystalline perfection now part of England's Crown Jewels. Research pulls him across India and into a diverse culture that is so exotic--and simultaneously so mystical, esoteric, and often criminal--that he may as well have fallen into Middle-earth.

The diamond now sits in the Tower of London, but the magnificent gem's past proves elusive, its light flickering in a maze of mirrors, cloaked in myth, lies, and mystery. The truth about whence it came and which palms it crossed may ultimately never be uncovered. Nevertheless, Rushby artfully uses the pretext to uncover rich stories: of the excesses of wealthy jewelers, of impoverished farmers who discover gleaming wealth in the fields, and of clandestine diamond markets, where cloth-wrapped baubles are sold on the streets like peddled crack.

Names of Indian places and people do get confusing--and there are more characters spinning around in this book than a Russian novel--but that doesn't matter. Rushby weaves Chasing the Mountain of Light with lush detail, creating a tale as compelling, multifaceted, and breathtaking as the diamond itself. --Melissa Rossi

From Publishers Weekly Rushby's interest in the ancient diamond trade was piqued after a chance meeting with a diamond smuggler in Ethiopia. Driven to unearth the history-drenched underbelly of the diamond trade, Rushby (Eating the Flowers of Paradise: A Journey Through the Drug Fields of Ethiopia and Yemen) treks across India in search of old gemstone mines and ancient accounts. Rushby isn't quite sure what he's looking for, but he narrows his focus to the fate of Koh-i-Noor, the world's largest diamond, from its origins circa 1000 B.C., when it was believed to be a gift from the Sun God, to its present home in the Tower of London. He seeks out unorthodox storytellers, be they miners, peasants, gem dealers, diplomats, gurus or Jesuit priests. Unfortunately, Rushby is limited to the stories told by those who speak English; he very eloquently describes the frustration of watching someone gesture and talk excitedly, only to receive a two-word translation from a jaded interpreter. However, Rushby's keen sense of humor and sharp eye more than compensate for this handicap. Acutely written, this meandering adventure will appeal equally to mystics, gemologists, historians and travelers. (Feb.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In some circles, gems--like the Koh-i-Noor diamond--are believed to influence people for good or ill. Now in the possession of the British Crown, that legendary Indian diamond has been coveted and fought over through the centuries. Here, Rushby (Eating the Flowers of Paradise) tours the subcontinent in order to trace the diamond's blood-splattered history. He visits diamond mines in Andhra Pradesh, Bombay and Gujarat, and Delhi and the Punjab; stops at roach-infested hotels; travels by bus and train; and gets robbed by diamond smugglers. Whether you agree with Rushby that the accursed diamond should not be returned to its lawful owners (India) is beside the point. This travelog--as spellbinding as any thriller--contains some brilliant portrayals of ex-princes, scholars, cranks, and other sundry characters whose hospitality Rushby enjoys. Highly recommended for public libraries.-Ravi Shenoy, Hinsdale P.L., IL Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Instead it is the chronicle of a wonderful offbeat trip through India tracing the path that the Koh-i-noor diamond may have followed. The author is that rarest and most estimable kind of travel writer who acts as the reader's eyes and ears. When Rushby describes a scene you see it, hear it, smell it and feel it. When he describes a conversation he captures the person's speech patterns, their personal idiosyncrasies, and makes them come alive. Unlike many other current travel writers, Rushby does not waste your time with pages about himself and his personal problems or his reactions to the people and places he visits. Instead, he gives you enough data so that you can make up your own mind about the poeple and places he describes. And what fascinating places they are! Southern Indian haunts of small time diamond smugglers, the ruined palaces of Mughal emperors, the studies of eccentric professors, the shabby apartments of claiments to the wealth of deposed rajas. All these are there and more, as the author moves through a series of cheap hotels via questionable transport of the sort that the reader loves to hear about but is glad not to have to actually use. This book reminded me a lot of Eric Hansen's Motoring with Mohammed, another of my favorite travel books. It's a definite "must read" for any serious armchair traveller!

McCarthy Rushby follows the legend(s) of the Koh-i-Noor diamond (the title's "Mountain of Light") as well as the history of Indian and Middle Eastern gem trading in this entertaining book. Like all good travel books, a unifying theme, once found, is seldom respected slavishly, so someone expecting a diligent history of the diamond itself and its travels would be better served by the Encyclopedia Brittanica. For others who wish to see an unusual side of the Indian subcontinent and its history, Rushby's an affable and able guide.

Unexpected Dividend By A Customer I bought this book to learn about more about the Koh-i-Noor and I found a much more interesting story in the despcriptions of India before partition and the gardens and architecture of the Mughals. At the start it's a bit on the 'ho hum, another traveling around India on the cheap' but once Rushby gets to Gujarat and beyond it's teriffic.

By Amazon Customer My homeschooling nephews are reading some Dallas Lore Sharp and their mother turned me on to his books. Absolutely gorgeous writing! I learned so much about animals in this book. I think of him as a poetic naturalist. I downloaded several of his books and savor them with an aromatic cup of Bustelo on the weekend. Very nutritious reading!Where Temple Grandin is the master expert on cows, this author is the master writer about animals in general. Triple-love his writing!

An Essential Read for all Educated People By Wanderer Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews. He or she doesn't want you to read Hoffer's book.Your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks. On The True Believer: This collection of essays is a classic, and it can be read in independent sections. "The Absence of Religion in Shakespeare" was fascinating. The essays are full of the epigrams that make Santayana famous--"Oaths are the fossils of piety.""But for Shakespeare, in the matter of religion, the choice lay between Christianity and nothing. He choose nothing." Yet: "Life did not pass before his eyes as a mere phantasmagoria. He seized upon its principles; he became wise.""In Shakespeare's time and country, to be religious already began to mean to be Puritanical; and in the divorce between the fulness of life on the one hand and the depth and unity of faith on the other, there could be no doubt to which side a man of imaginative instincts would attach himself."Other great essays in this book include, "The Poetry of Barbarism" and "The Poetry of Christian Dogma."From an essay in other book comes Santayana's famous line: "A fanatic is a person who redoubles his effort after he has forgotten his aim." "A fanatic closes his eyes daily to the sun, so that he might see better by starlight."Hear, hear! You cannot call yourself educated without having read Santayana. Also, read Eric Hoffer's little book, "The True Believer." Click here:The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements (Perennial Classics)Another great book is "A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought," by David Allen Williams. This book has quotes from Hoffer and dozens upon dozens of other writers. Opposite each quotation is a rare 19th century engraving. Highly recommended--positive and inspirational. Check it out here:A Celebration of Humanism and FreethoughtYour comments--positive or negative--are appreciated. Thanks.

Do not buy unless you want only a skimmed overview of a book that's justly famous as an early twentieth-century example of humanistic literary criticism.

Why Marry?: A Comedy In Three Acts, by Jesse Lynch Williams

Best Ebook Why Marry?: A Comedy In Three Acts, by Jesse Lynch Williams

"Why Marry?" was the first play by Jesse Lynch Williams and it was difficult to live up to since it won the first Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1918. Originally titled "And So They Were Married" it is a smart and humorous look at society's view of marriage and love and how the two aren't always the same or even appear to be related. While this theme could still be used today, the play probably wouldn't do very well with a modern audience since it is clearly a product of the early 20th century. Nevertheless, for those who enjoy classic plays, this one is certainly well done. The subjects of the play's title are Helen and Ernest. Helen is a woman with a career as Ernest's lab assistant, and the two have fallen in love Helen has become convinced that the worst thing they can do is get married; after all scientists are not paid well and she does not want to disrupt his career or hers. Ernest is more inclined to get married, but Helen is able to sway him with her arguments.

By Dave_42 "Why Marry?" was the first play by Jesse Lynch Williams and it was difficult to live up to since it won the first Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1918. She is not able to so easily sway her brother John, who does believe in marriage but not divorce. John is married to Lucy, who is trying to be a good wife, but who recognizes problems in her own marriage. Then next couple involves Jean, Helen's younger sister, and Rex, a man from a noted family who is in love with Helen but is pushed into marrying Jean as John is trying to arrange a match. One half of another couple, Uncle Everett who is a judge, provides some sanity even as his own marriage seems headed towards divorce due to each other accommodating the other, even to the point of doing things they hate, such as eating Tutti-Frutti ice cream. The last major character is Cousin Theodore, who is a clergyman and who tries to guide Helen and Ernest to marriage. It is interesting that the play shares the themes of love and marriage (and even one of the main character's first name) with two other Pulitzer winners from the same year: Sara Teasdale's "Love Songs" (technically not a Pulitzer winner, but close enough), and Ernest Poole's "His Family". Teasdale's poetry deals with the passion of the subject of Love, and Poole's "His Family" deals with the subject (among many others) in a much more serious way, but all three serve their purpose well. This play's humour and wry societal commentary help make it accessible to people still today, even if the unheard of idea of a man and woman living together outside of marriage no longer would shock anyone.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the fighting and wounding of Stuart *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "He told me he never expected to live through the war, and that if we were conquered, that he did not want to live." – Major Andrew R. Venable, Stuart’s aide Alongside Robert E. Lee, no one epitomized the chivalry and heroism celebrated by the Lost Cause more than J.E.B. Stuart, the most famous cavalry officer of the Civil War. Stuart was equal parts great and grandiose while leading the cavalry for the Confederacy in Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Stuart was a throwback to the past, colorfully dressing with capes, sashes, and an ostrich plumed hat, while sporting cologne and a heavy beard, but he was also brilliant in conducting reconnaissance, and he proved capable of leading both cavalry and infantry at battles like Chancellorsville. As the eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee's army, none were better, despite the fact that he was only in his late 20s and early 30s during the Civil War, far younger than most men of senior rank. In early May of 1864, Union cavalry commander Philip Sheridan organized a massive raid against Confederate supply and railroad lines near Richmond. On May 9, the largest cavalry force ever assembled in the Eastern Theater, over 10,000 horsemen and 32 artillery pieces, arched southeast intending to slip behind Lee's army and head toward Richmond. By doing so, they could harass supply lines, cut up railroad tracks behind Lee’s army, and at least feint towards Richmond in a way that would bring about a confrontation. This would give Sheridan the chance to seek his biggest objective: eliminate Stuart’s cavalry. Moving aggressively, Sheridan crossed the North Anna River and seized Beaver Dam Station on the Virginia Central Railroad. Anticipating their arrival, Stuart and his cavalrymen had already destroyed most of the critical military supplies, so Sheridan's men destroyed railroad cars, ripped out telegraph lines, and rescued hundreds of Union prisoners of war who had been captured at the Battle of the Wilderness days earlier. Around noon on May 11, 1864, the two forces met at Yellow Tavern, an abandoned inn six miles north of Richmond, Virginia. Not only did the Union outnumber the Confederates, it had superior firepower because many of the horsemen were armed with newly-developed rapid-firing Spencer carbine rifles. Despite the disadvantages, however, the Confederates proved resilient for several hours as both sides conducted charges and countercharges, but during one of them, Stuart came into view of some retreating Union soldiers of George Custer’s 5th Michigan cavalry. One of them, a 48 year old sharpshooter named John A. Huff, found himself only about 20 yards away from the vaunted and easily recognizable Stuart. Huff turned and shot Stuart with his .44-caliber pistol, sending a bullet slicing through his stomach and exiting his back, just right of his spine. In excruciating pain, an ambulance took Stuart to the home of his brother-in-law Dr. Charles Brewer, in Richmond, to await his wife's arrival, but before his wife could even reach him, Stuart died the following day at 7:38 p.m. In his final moments, Stuart ordered his sword and spurs be given to his son, and his last words were "I am resigned; God's will be done." He was just 31. The Battle of Yellow Tavern: The History of the Civil War Battle that Ended J.E.B. Stuart’s Life comprehensively covers the events leading up to the battle, the fighting itself, and the aftermath of the battle. Accounts of the battle by important participants are also included, along with maps of the battle and pictures of important people, places, and events. You will learn about the Battle of Yellow Tavern like you never have before.

Here are some of my observations:Good points: Few- Lots of illustrations- Good writing style- Ggood sprinkling of first-person accounts.Bad points:- Most maps of very poor quality. They could have been effective if they were more intelligible.- While many first-hand accounts were used, the author did not reference their works-- he only lifted them from secondary works.- The book is supposed to be on the battle of Yellow Tavern, but only six short pages are devoted to it. Very incomplete and superficial treatment of it.I hate to post negative reviews, but I feel as though I wasted my money on this book.

Easy to read and understand the characters in this drama. The Federal cavalry commanders are less well known and the book gives little background information on them. The Union cavalry lacked clear, decisive leadership until Phil Sheridan took over their leadership and influenced a vision for cavalry's use with U.S. Grant. The combination of Sheridan's vision and aggressive character, Grant's risk tolerance in a new use for cavalry, and J.E.B. Stuart's flamboyant arrogance led to the battle's pivotal outcome.

Travel to the War of the Roses By Navy Comm O Not completely accurate historically as Richard, Duke of Gloucester would have been a child at the time this is set (and as a Ricardian I wasn't happy with his characterization of Good King Richard) and Mr. Stevenson portrays him as a fully grown man, but this was a wonderful revisiting to some of the pages of my childhood. The illustrations by N.C. Wyeth are well worth the 99 cents. Read and enjoy medieval, pre-Tudor England.

I think this is one of Stevenson's earliest work and the plot was somewhat wooden and the character weren't complex at all, but there were a few descriptions of the woods, or lyrical sentences that hinted at Stevenson's future successes. In addition due either to Stevenson or the editors there are some inconsistencies.Although I checked Lighted-hearted for mood, it realistically depicted a grim time and made me happy to be alive in the 20th and 21st centuries.
