All of Adeline Sargeant's works are inundated with this concept, and if you have an issue with it, you will feel the story so contrived that it would be frustrating. I have read many of her works, as I enjoy her characters and the historical information her novels provide. Some of her characters are somewhat one dimensional, but others are very well developed and complex. Under False Pretences was a good read. Her novel a "Life Sentence" is even better.

The plots for each is vert divergent,bun in the end there is a very satisfying solution for each. The book was very riveting.

Just a few weeks before he passed away at the age of 91 years 7 months, I got this book sent to him. I am so glad he got to enjoy it again before he passed. I am reading it now and it's a true picture of what life is like for someone who is painfully bashful. So funny and endearing! And as it was written back in the day, there is no bad language. This can be read and enjoyed by all ages.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An entertaining and informative read By Kaminoge Let's begin with a disclaimer: I know the author. And a clarification: I did not know the writer during the period covered in this interesting and entertaining book, even though I was living in Taiwan during much of the time he was there.Adams touches on several themes in his recollection of his experiences as a writer covering East Asia in the early years of this century. Based in Taiwan during most of that period, he filed stories on topics running the gamut from Taiwanese politics to the ongoing insurgency on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. More importantly, he details the death of traditional journalism and the rise of new forms of media, working in a period when no one was sure in what direction journalism was taking.The author's love of writing comes through as he discusses his motivations for becoming a journalist, as well as his frustrations at not being able to focus on those topics he considers of importance. As an example, Adams describes the hard work and effort he put into a series of articles on Japanese labor practices, yet it was a throwaway piece of his on a Japanese fertility festival that received all the attention from editors and readers. No wonder the author has since changed careers.I would recommend "Welcome Home Master" to anyone interested in journalism and/or East Asia. Adams writes with insight and a sense of humor that makes this book both informative and entertaining.

Gountanis The Sheldon family history in the Waukegan Libray in Lake County, Illinois states the author used Mary Ann Hazen/Sheldon as the principle character in this novel. Opie P. Reed was a boarder at her farm for several summers. Mary Ann was married to Squire Sheldon. The farm on which Mary Ann and Squire Sheldon lived and owned was located in a community known as Rollins, near Fourth Lake in the Township of Avon, Lake County, Illinois. Mary Ann and Squire came to Rollins from Mayfield, Cuyhoga County, Ohio around 1862. Mary Ann burned to death on June 29, 1916. Mary Ann and Squire Sheldon are buried in Avon Cemetary, Lake County, Illinois.
