"An Insightful and Intimate Biography" By Johannes Platonicus William Roper's biography of Sir Thomas More provides an intimate account of More's life from his own son-in-law, who himself lived with the Saint for sixteen years. So, from this first-hand source of More's life comes an intimate, unique and fascinating narrative of the principle events of his life; but mostly, the events described begin shortly before his elevation to Lord Chancellor, so for anyone looking for insight on More's early life, this work is not the one. Although, on the other hand, for anyone seeking to find a dramatic account of More's tragic but heroic fate, or for anyone just looking to find a collective bevy of More's wise old sayings, Roper's work will be of inestimable value. The only drawbacks to Roper's biography is that it is short, lacks scholarship, and fails in general to surface a clear portrayal of Thomas More's life and overall character. Furthermore, with this in mind, it can easily be imagined how much more we would know of him if someone with much more depth and perspective as an author sought to comprise biography of Sir Thomas More instead. However, had Roper not written at all, it may equally be envisaged how much we would have lost More's life. So, in the end, Roper's work pays off for the details he provides, and for the fact that his familiarity with More engenders a certain level of confidence and reasonable reliability as a whole. William Roper's work is indispensable for anyone serious about the study of Sir Thomas More.

Complete in one volume Lady Catherine de Bourgh is prepared to be very generous when it comes to medical care for her sickly daughter, Anne – generous enough to lure noted physician Dr. Thomas Bennet to give up his London practice and move his family to Rosings Park. But his good income comes with a price: complete dependence on his demanding patroness’s every whim.     Now the Bennet family is trapped, reliant on Lady Catherine for their survival. Their patroness controls every aspect of the Bennet household, from the shelves in the closet to the selection of suitors for the five Bennet daughters. Now she has chosen a husband for headstrong Elizabeth Bennet– Mr. George Wickham.   But Lady Catherine’s nephew, Fitzwilliam Darcy, is not so sure about his aunt’s choice. He is fascinated by the compassionate Elizabeth who seems to effortlessly understand everyone around her, including him. Lady Catherine has other plans for Darcy, though, and she forbids Elizabeth to even speak to him.   As Anne’s health takes a turn for the worse, Darcy and Elizabeth are thrown together as Dr. Bennet struggles to save Anne’s life. Darcy can no longer deny the truth – he is in love with Elizabeth Bennet. But Lady Catherine will do anything to stop Darcy from marrying her – even if it means Elizabeth will lose everything she loves. Jane Austen-inspired, Sweet Regency Romance

Mistaking Her Character: A Pride and Prejudice Variation, by Maria Grace

About the Author Though Maria Grace has been writing fiction since she was ten years old, those early efforts happily reside in a file drawer and are unlikely to see the light of day again, for which many are grateful. After penning five file-drawer novels in high school, she took a break from writing to pursue college and earn her doctorate in Educational Psychology. After 16 years of university teaching, she returned to her first love, fiction writing.   She has one husband, two graduate degrees and two black belts, three sons, four undergraduate majors, five nieces, six more novels in draft form, waiting for editing, seven published novels, sewn eight Regency era costumes, shared her life with nine cats through the years and tries to run at least ten miles a week.   She can be contacted at: author.MariaGrace@gmail.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/AuthorMariaGrace G+: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103065128923801481737/posts On Amazon.com: http://amazon.com/author/mariagrace Random Bits of Fascination (http://RandomBitsofFascination.com) Austen Variations (http://AustenVariations.com) English Historical Fiction Authors (http://EnglshHistoryAuthors.blogspot.com) On Twitter @WriteMariaGrace On Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/mariagrace423/

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This story is great By Tina Carter So this book starts out with the Bennets living in Kent because Mr. Bennet is Anne de Bourgh's doctor. Jane and Elizabeth are the step-daughters to the current Mrs. Bennet. Their mother died when they were younger but the reader is not told how she died. Lady Catherine proclaims herself as the mother hawk of Rosings and takes "care" of everybody within her domain. Personally I saw her as a controlling bitch. And Anne is just a copy of her mother. She seriously tries to get Elizabeth to be her new companion because Mrs. Jenkinson is not as lively as she is. Which I don't understand how she thought that was going to work as Lizzy is a gentleman's daughter and was not seeking a position.Lady Catherine is still trying to push her daughter off on Darcy in this book even though he has fallen in love with Lizzy. Richard even goes so far as to tell him to marry Anne and to take Elizabeth as his mistress. Then when Anne dies he should marry Lizzy after a three month grieving period. Most of society would have told him to do that but our dear Darcy has morals and refuses to do that. I love Darcy in this book just for that reason.I will admit that I read a few chapters of this book when it was being released on Austen Variations. However I chose not the read the whole story and I'm glad I didn't. It enabled me to enjoy the story without knowing what was going to happen next. I enjoyed this book a lot and am looking forward to reading Ms. Grace's next novel.

By ArkansasAustenFan What a switch to have Dr. Bennet as Ann de Bourgh's personal physician under the thumb of Lady Catherine. Of course, Elizabeth is his most trusted assistant, though he treats her horribly. Never fear, the staff at Rosings knows full well who really cares about them, the de Bourghs and the whole neighborhood. This is a very different character type for Lizzy in that she moves well under the radar to do the good she does while taking the abuse from her mom, dad and Lady Catherine in stride. Compassion and intelligence are the character traits that shine through her understated beauty. Darcy is not fooled and he sees who has the respect of the staff and understands she is the responsible for any advancement in Ann's health. Dr. Bennet has modern medical ideas, but it is Lizzy that carries them out to bring about the success he enjoys.Of course, Darcy has never met such a lady before and finds himself drawn to her light like a firefly.Lady Catherine is continually meddling into the affairs of the Collins and Bennet families and intends to find husbands for the eligible daughters. Her choices are well below standard and would be sad marriages for sure. This is definitely an action filled book with lots of things being done outside the attention of Dr. Bennet and Lady Catherine. Richard is in the mix as always and provides much needed support.I enjoyed this different twist and hope you do too. If you are devout Austen fan that do not like to vary too far from the original, this may be a bit too far out of line for you. You won't find quotes from Jane in this book. It is original.I have several of Maria Grace's books and they are on my re-read list. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

I liked that the author didn't simply lift pieces of the original story but instead made it her own. Mr Bennet is darker in this story but his basic personality ( taking the easy road and not taking responsibility ) is the same. Lizzy is his favorite only because of the help she can give him. I loved Darcy's devotion and the way the Gardiners and Lady Catherine's staff protect Lizzy.I didn't particulary love Lizzy's self doubt nor Jane's selfishness but did appreciate the psychological insight into their characters. This book left me with confidene that Lizzy's life with Darcy would be the life she deserves!Thank you Maria Grace for a fun story!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "I have but three motions, old boy,--charge--toast--fire--and off we go: ha, ha, ha!" By Christopher (o.d.c.) From the editor's introduction:"Originally it had been performed in Dublin in 1764 under the title The True-born Scotchman, but in 1770 the Examiner of Plays in London refused to license it. It was re-submitted in 1779 and again forbidden, but was finally allowed and performed at Covent Garden on 10 May 1781, with the author in the part of Sir Pertinax Macsycophant." (The author, the greatest character actor of his generation, held back publication until his 90th year to maintain a monopoly of the role)This is a fine comedy from an era which did not abound in brilliant plays. Not only Macsycophant, but also Lord Lumley and his daughter Rodolpha are very striking 'characters,' to which the rest of the cast play straight men. In this scene, the Lady Rodolpha and Mac's son Egerton have been left alone together (the fathers both desire the match, the children both do not):Eger. [Aside.] A pleasant interview, this--hem, hem!Lady Rod. [Aside, mimicks him to herself.] Hem! he will not open the congress, I see.--Then I will.--[very loud.] Come, sir, when will you begin?Eger. [Greatly surprised.] Begin! what, madam?Lady Rod. To make love till me.Eger. Love, madam!Lady Rod. Ay, love, sir.--Why, you have never said a word till me on the subject,--nor cast a single glance at me,--nor heaved one tender sigh,--nor even secretly squeezed my loof:--now, sir, thof our fathers are so tyrannical as to dispose of us without the consent of our hearts;--yet you, sir, I hope, have more humanity than to think of marrying me without administering some of the preliminaries, usual on those occasions [...]Egerton plays the straight man to his father as well:--But, sir, I hope you will not so exert your influence as to insist upon my supporting a measure by an obvious, prostituted sophistry, in direct opposition to my character and my conscience.Sir Per. Conscience! why, you are mad! did you ever hear any man talk of conscience in political matters? Conscience, quotha? I have been in Parliament these three and thraty years, and never heard the term made use of before:--sir, it is an unparliamentary word, and you will be laughed at for it;--therefore I desire you will not offer to impose upon me with sic phantoms, but let me know your reason for thus slighting my friends and disobeying my commands. [...]But individual passages do not give an adequate impression of the play as a whole, which is as stage-worthy as a veteran actor could make it, and anti-sentimental in a way that still seems fresh and funny.

This is the paperback version of the 2015 Gold Award Kindle book, one of the best books available about life for both expat residents and natives in villages and cities across Mexico. What sets it apart from other books about living in Mexico is that it's a literary collection of twenty-two short stories and essays, full of insights by contemporary authors who write and live full time in Mexico or who have spent a lot of time living in the country. Their writing spans a variety of topics; many contributions extol life in Mexico's abundant sunlight while others examine what the shadows sometimes obscure. It's a sampler of sorts, with active hyperlinks for more information about the authors and their other writing. The anthology contains complete chapters from books and also single pieces from internationally-acclaimed authors and emerging writers: Bruce Berger, E.G. Brady, Ann Hazard, Michael Hogan, Jim Johnston, William Kaliher, Janice Kimball, Judy King, Jeanine Kitchel, David Lida, C.M. Mayo, Carol M. Merchasin, Mikel Miller, Katie O'Grady, Antonio Rambles, Daniel Reveles, Robert Richter, Lin Robinson & Ana Maria Corona, John Scherber, Jennifer Stace, James Tipton, and Candelora Versace. Perhaps the best way to gain valuable insights about the day-to-day life of people in a foreign country is to read good books by authors living and/or writing in that country. The purpose of this book is to identify several writers who can help readers accomplish this for Mexico. Edited by Mikel Miller, with co-editors Michael Hogan and Linton Robinson. Enjoy!

Mexico: Sunlight & Shadows: Short Stories & Essays by Mexico Writers, by Michael Hogan, Linton Robinson, Mikel Miller

Review This anthology reveals many different dimensions of Mexico in 22 fiction and nonfiction selections, most of them by U.S.-born authors. Drawn from varied sources that include travel guides, blogs, and short story collections, the pieces form an eclectic, if inconsistent, mosaic. "The Blossoming of Baja's Pacific Coast" by Ann Hazard vividly praises the area's inexplicable draw for artists and musicians as well as the seductive allure of its fresh Margaritas...some of the selections positively hum, including David Lida's "Acapulco Gold," which sees the golden arches of McDonald's and its dining tourists as a beacon for a homeless child, and Bruce Berger's evocative and gorgeously crafted "Under theCypress." The anthology's montage of images and voices creates an almost puzzling effect of simultaneously unveiling and obscuring its subject; thoughtful travelers might feel similarly upon leaving a destination and wondering whether it was ever really there for them to know at all. --Publishers Weekly (BookLife)

About the Author Michael Hogan is the author of twenty-four books, including the best-selling  Irish Soldiers of Mexico and the controversial Savage Capitalism and the Myth of Democracy. He is Emeritus Humanities Chair at the American School Foundation of Guadalajara, and a former professor of International Relations at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara. He is also a member of the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Sociedad de Geografía y Estadísticas de Jalisco.

Outstanding By Penelope James This anthology, with stories and essays written mainly by Americans living in Mexico, turned out to be an unexpected treat. As a long-time resident and a Mexican “insider”—someone who grew up in a Mexican family—I approached this book with some trepidation. So I was surprised by the writers' knowledgeable and insightful contributions that cover a variety of Mexico's cultural, geographical, and somewhat convoluted social facets. Readers will laugh, empathize, relate, shiver, venture into mysterious waters, stroll through Mexico City, enjoy a typical Mexican celebration, listen to mariachi music, discover the benefits of moving to Mexico, and be seduced by the exuberance and the sensory experience that is Mexico. This anthology rates among the best I’ve read in terms of quality of writing and content. Well worth the read.

By Tony Burton Like any collection of stories and essays by different authors, styles and topics vary, but this new volume never disappoints. Contributors include some of the very best writers about Mexico currently practicing their craft. A book that can be read cover-to-cover, but is more fun when dipped into randomly. My favorite? That would be telling... choose your own!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Mexico: Sunlight & Shadows is a hit. By Penn Wallace Mexico: Sunlight & Shadows is a remarkable book. A collection of short stories written by diverse authors about Mexico it is a delightful, easy read. All of the stories are well written and fast paced. There are personal anecdotes and short fiction. You don't need to read the book cover-to-cover on the first reading, although most people will. You can pick it up and read a selection at random whenever you have a few minutes.Although there is some great writing in here, there were a couple of stories I just didn't feel ready to read. For instance, HIV/AIDS and the Yucatan was not a subject I was in the mood for. Acapulco Gold is a great piece of short fiction, I was drawn in by the main character and rooting for him all the way. However, I didn't like the ending, although I saw it coming. I guess that's just real life. Some of the stories, like Quinceanera, are touching and make you want to move to Mexico TODAY. I regretted that I didn't get to the Mariachi Festival described in Mariachi is Mexico's Music while I lived there. I will definitely make it when I go back.All-in-all, this is a very worthwhile read. If you have any interest in Mexico at all, you can't miss it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. At Zutphen By William A Baurle Sir Philip Sidney died at a tragically young age. He was one of the Elizabethan master technicians, his faultless ear leading him to the composition and mastery of many popular and obscure forms, including the sestina, for which he is deservedly remembered (his was a double sestina, resurrected by Auden much later, undoubtedly one of the models that revived use of that form by contemporary poets).Sidney's prose work here, A Defence of Poesie, is well known and a still powerful apologetic for the respectability of serious verse-craft.This is free, complete, perfectly lineated and formatted, and will be an excellent addition to your collection of poetry books for Kindle. The poems begin at location 817.From the master himself, the close of A Defence of Poesie:...But if (fie of such a but!) you be born so near the dull-making cataract of Nilus, that you cannot hear the planet-like music of poetry; if you have so earth-creeping a mind, that it cannot lift itself up to look to the sky of poetry, or rather, by a certain rustical disdain, will become such a Mome, as to be a Momus of poetry; then, though I will not wish unto you the ass's ears of Midas, nor to be driven by a poet's verses, as Bubonax was, to hang himself; nor to be rhymed to death, as is said to be done in Ireland; yet thus much curse I must send you in the behalf of all poets; that while you live, you live in love, and never get favour, for lacking skill of a sonnet; and when you die, your memory die from the earth for want of an epitaph. - Sidney, Philip (2011-03-24). A Defence of Poesie and Poems (Kindle Locations 812-817). . Kindle Edition.

While there is little to say about this work that has not already been said let us hope that this work does not suffer its original fate again viz. lost. For a time this gem of concise clearly reasoned defense of poetry was lost because of being overlooked due to its introduction. It was assumed to be a treatise on equine matters.Students may wish to consider why Sir Phillip began his work this way and there are a multitude of theories. Perhaps he was the original prankster or making historical elusive allusions to Plato and his charioteer. In any event it is great literature and worth reading even after 500 years. Read it to entertain yourself and stimulate your imagination. And guess what? It is not that long.

It was an evening in the first week in February, 1778. Supper was over in the house of Cornelius De Vries, which stood on Green Street, Philadelphia, and in that part of the town known as the Northern Liberties. Agatha De Vries, the elderly and maiden sister of Cornelius, had washed and put away the dishes and had gone around the corner to gossip with a neighbor.

This author was a really good story teller and writer. The story moves along nicely with a young boy as the hero. It has some battle scenes and a mystery that keeps you reading because you want to solve the mystery. There are some papers hidden in a cabin that tell some shocking thing and even the British want the papers, There is much adventure. Recommended if you like historical books.

By Jerriemy Chilson A short but interesting and fast paced novel that follows a young boy from Philadelphia to Valley forge, where he grows into a heroic rebel soldier fighting for a cause he truly believes in. Then on to the blood soaked fields of Monmouth where he witnessed the death of many dear to him and finishing in the valley of Wyoming in Pennsylvania. A historically accurate account of the times though the story feels fictional from the start.

Trollope and Marshall By Amazon Customer I am not sure that if you like Anthony Trollope [I have read almost all his books] you will like Archibald Marshall. They both describe English life at a very significant time in the history of the nation. Nevertheless, and although I like Trollope, his character descriptions borders on the cynical while Marshall’s characters-and they are very well portrayed-come to some sort of individual redemption. They are human, but ultimately find a way, with the help and understanding of those who love them, to become or to overcome, while Trollope relies on circumstances to make things better for his characters. I like Marshall better. The Clintons are great!

Izzy's Fire: Finding Humanity In The Holocaust, by Nancy Wright Beasley

Review "Izzy's Fire is an intensely moving, deeply thought-provoking account of man's humanity to man in the midst of the unimaginable horror of the Holocaust. Raising fundamental questions about right and wrong and the consequences of personal action, Izzy's Fire is a powerful teaching tool for adults and young people alike." -Anne E. Derse, U.S. ambassador (ret.) "I met Nancy Wright Beasley at the American Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania. I have never met a person with so much empathy towards 'another' and the terrible Jewish fate during WWII...As a Holocaust survivor of the Kovno Ghetto, I bow my head to Nancy and admire the book she has written with such incredible sensitivity." -Irena Veisaite˙, PhD, retired professor, literary scholar, and theatre critic (Vilnius, Lithuania) "This book is extraordinary and could become one of the most important books of its genre." -Martin J. Goldman, director of survivor affairs (ret.), U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum "Izzy's Fire is remembrance. It should never die." -Armchair Interviews "Remembering the Holocaust is the best way to prevent another. Nancy Wright Beasley courageously stands at the forefront of this sacred endeavor." -Rabbi Shmully Hecht, Shabtai: The Jewish Society at Yale University "Izzy's Fire gives voice to those who survived the Holocaust in hiding and is a welcome addition to Holocaust studies shelves." -Midwest Book Reviews "A fascinating account of a few Jewish families that escaped the horrors of the ghetto in Kovno and by some miracle survived the war years in one of the most hostile environments to Jews on the European continent. It is a document of unlimited courage and devotion, of boundless hope, and passion to survive...This book is another very important addition to the Holocaust." -Abe Larwe, editor, English section of Gachelet, a publication of the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel. As the story of one family, this remarkable book may stand as a metaphor for thousands of others, unknown and untold as accounts from the victims of the 20th century's greatest crime." -Charles W. Sydnor, Jr., PhD, author of Soldiers of Destruction: The SS Death's Head Division, 1933-1945; executive director, Virginia Holocaust Museum "Beasley draws from personal interviews, research, and numerous memoirs, including those from Israel "Izzy" Ipson, who helped his family escape from Kovno Ghetto, one of the most notorious killing fields for Jews in Lithuania. Complete with maps and photos, Izzy's Fire is a story for all time." -Rebecca Reads "As a member of Brandermill Rotary, Nancy Wright Beasley upholds Rotary International's major theme: service above self. In Izzy's Fire, we're looking at a handbook for service above self. It's one thing to talk it, but quite another to see in this book how people actually lived it. Unless we actually live it, it doesn't really mean anything." -Jim Bynum, governor, Rotary District 7600, 2011-12 "I chose Izzy's Fire as an excellent example of how to show students and teachers all the situations about understanding the Holocaust. It relates to victims, collaborators, the Nazis, bystanders, and rescuers, and offers many moral questions." -Ingrida Vilkiene˙, deputy director of education, International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes (Vilnius, Lithuania) "I know Izzy's Fire changes lives, those of adults and students. I witnessed it firsthand during the seven years I taught it." -Rebecca Quesenberry, reading specialist "Izzy's Fire changed my life, as I never realized how terrible discrimination can be. If I could, I would make Izzy's Fire required reading for all middle and high school students." -Sam Stark, 16, Thomas Dale High School, Chesterfield County, Va.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Informative and engrossing By Alter Wiener Izzy's Fire is a personal account from a Holocaust survivor. As a Holocaust survivor myself, I had experienced and witnessed horrid and deplorable images as those depicted in this book. Reading about Izzy Ipson and his family's suffering under the Nazi's yoke captivated me and reminded me of my own travails; it stirred powerful and unsettling emotions. On the other hand, I was profoundly moved reading how Oma and Vaclovas Paskauskas, Lithuanian Christians risked the life of their entire family to save the lives of thirteen Jews, strangers. At the time when many Lithuanians were turning in Jews to be rewarded by the Germans, the Paskauskas family decided to save Jews out of compassion; not expecting to be rewarded. When six million Jews cried out from the depths of the pits and agony: `save us, save us,' nobody came to their rescue. Righteous individuals like the Paskauskas family did.In July 1943, I worked in a factory where there were also German employees. Signs all over the factory warned the German employees not to communicate with the häftlinge (detainees) or even make eye contact with them. Anyone who did not comply with those rules would have been Verdammnt (doomed!). One day a middle-aged German woman, on the way to the restroom, did make eye contact with me, and pointed her finger at a box. When I reached that box I found a sandwich underneath it. The sandwich consisted of two slices of white bread with a slice of cheese. Suddenly, I wanted so much to stay alive. Not only did I feel stronger physically, but also my faith in humanity was strengthened. That lady repeated her noble act of leaving a sandwich for me every day, for as long as I worked in that building. Those sandwiches might have helped me to survive! I have no yardstick to measure that. It was only for thirty days out of the 1,050 days of my captivity. However, I do know that her righteous deed gave me hope. She was a glowing candle in a silver candlestick jutting out in the darkness, while my candle of life was melting to the point of wax residue. What motivated that German woman to risk her life for me, a stranger? I was only a young Jewish boy, an untermentch (subhuman) by Nazi criterion. She ignored the propaganda, a daily part of her life, and helped me.That German woman risked her life, only her life. Vaclovas Paskauskas risked the lives of his entire family; I am at awe; it indeed amazes me. It is a compelling example that there are good people and bad people everywhere. Ergo, we should never generalize. The Bible tells us in Genesis 18:23 "Will you sweep away the righteous and the wicked; the innocent and the guilty?" If there is one righteous person in a village where everybody else is wicked, the entire village must not be destroyed! By the same token, I shall not hate the German people because of that one noble German woman. It has become a major guiding light in the path of my life. That unidentified German woman jeopardized her life to alleviate my despondency and my hunger pangs. I will always remember her daring act. She had the conviction and the courage to risk her own life to save another's life, to save someone so very different from herself. She has been, and forever will be, my heroine. Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Museum, in Jerusalem Israel recognized the Paskauskas family as the Righteous Among the Nations. Yad Vashem couldn't recognize my heroine as one of the Righteous Among the Nations, because I don't have her name. The Holocaust is now rarely discussed and seldom taught in many countries. In the United States teaching the Holocaust is mandatory only in six States (CA, FL, IL, NJ, NY & PA). I am unable to forget the dark landscape; I am unable to cross the river of grief. I still carry the physical and mental scars of the Holocaust every day, but I have learned to live with it like somebody learns to live with illness. The Holocaust is a foreign language difficult to learn, but nevertheless it is imperative to know. Sharing my life story with hundreds of life audiences and thousands of readers of my autobiography From a Name to a Number is gratifying. People acknowledge my contribution to perpetuate the Holocaust legacy; I am often being told that I have a virtually moral obligation; a mission to share my story.I applaud Nancy Wright Beasley, a freelance writer to have a Jewish family's Holocaust experience recorded, and published. Initially, she was reluctant to do that, because she had found "the Holocaust so disturbing." Still, the relayed episodes of horror didn't cloud her mind. The story is lucid; well written. The simple language will let young people understand and absorb. For me, it was a quick read, still informative and engrossing. I will recommend Izzy's Fire during my presentations at schools, churches, libraries etc.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Putting a face to the horrors of inhumanity By Rebekah L. Pierce In all honesty, I had never read a book about holocaust survivors. Sure, I learned about the brutal, senseless mass murder of millions of Jews and seen those horrid, deplorable images of dead bodies of Jews lying around strewn while German soldiers looked on in glee in History class. But NEVER have I read a personal account, and it was far more devastating to my sense of humanity than I could ever imagine. From the first pages of Izzy's Fire, by Nancy Wright Beasley, I was enthralled with Izzy Ipson and his family's story as well as those of their friends and family. Ms. Beasley did an awesome job of bringing their story to life for me, but more so making their story, their journey through hell, mine. I connected with these people because I am a wife and mother. I thought and later asked myself after I had read the story, would we have survived something like this? Would my husband have risked his life day in and day out, like Izzy, to save my son, and me and to provide safety and food for us? Would my son have endured as Jay did?Edna lost two babies, one during the roundup in Lithuania and one after their escape to the United States. How did she keep her sanity? Was she made of steel? No! Ms. Beasley brilliantly displayed Edna's moments of fear, happiness, and extreme stress, like when her step-father, mother, her sister Minnie and their sons Fievel and Chaim were put on board the truck heading for certain death. It was only the knowing that Izzy would surely not live without them that made Edna not board that train with her son, and of course, Jay's stubborn desire to live to see his father. No one was without pain in this story; not even the reader. I left the reading knowing the Ipson's persevered because of their faith and strength in God and one another. Even when faced with the knowledge that their families were executed, they still had one another to get them through, and that's what they needed. Not even hiding out in a make-shift shelter in a potato patch with 7 other people could break their spirit and resolve. I cannot tell you exactly how many heroes are in this story. From the German and Jewish Ghetto soldiers who risked their lives to give information and ways to escape to not only Izzy but to others as well to the Gentiles (non-Jews) who risked their lives to hide their fellow human beings. In short, Ms. Beasley is by far one of the most powerful and genuine storytellers whose best gift, I believe, is letting the voice of the characters tell their own story. In no way does her voice intrude upon the essence of Izzy's story. I recommend Izzy's Fire without abandon to anyone who wants to read about real people, real life, and real issues. It should be required reading in the public schools across America to help not only put a face and name to the horror's of the evil that man can do, but to also demonstrate the resilience of man to overcome when the odds are stacked against him. This book sent me running to the Holocaust Museum; it brought History alive for me, and it will do the same to you.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. If you "enjoy" this book.......... By Robert C. Hufford ....there is something wrong with you. But, it WILL inspire you. {I shall say at the outset that I will leave out a lot of the names I can't pronounce}. This is the story of a family of three Lithuanian Jews, and, secondarily, of ten others, saved from the Holocaust by the courage and sacrifice of one Catholic family. They survived, and made it to America....The tale is told from the viewpoint of Etta Ipp, who became Edna Ipson here in Richmond, VA. "Izzy's Fire" was a pet name her husband's family had for her. Some of the scenes, and stories, will make you sick. {DON'T let little kids read it}. Some will make you cry. There is great evil in the world; if you doubt that, read this book. There is also great good...never doubt that, either, for you shall meet it here. The Ipsons lost almost all of their family to the Nazis, but they survived, and even prospered. Izzy died in 1997. Edna was still alive at the publication of the book in 2005. Jay, their young son, is now in his mid 70s, and helps run the Virginia Holocaust Museum, in Richmond. He is living history. I shall do something I never do, and recommend you not buy this from your favorite bookstore...if you purchase it from the Holocaust Museum, Jay will sign and personalize your copy; that virtually makes it a sacred relic. I assure you I treasure mine.

By HMS Warspite "Rilla of Ingleside" is the dramatic eighth novel in Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved "Anne of Green Gables" series. The happy family of Anne and Gilbert Blythe in Glen St Mary, Prince Edward Island, will be caught up in the onset of the First World War. One by one, Anne's sons and the sons of the neighboring Meredith family will be off to war with the Canadian Army. The women of the Ingleside household will be left behind to hold the home front. Anne's 15 year-old daughter Rilla may face the biggest challenges. On the last night of peace, she makes an adult promise to handsome Ken Ford as he leaves for the Army. The baby of her own family, she will find the grit to care for an abandoned war baby and to lead the local Junior Red Cross chapter. She will console a beloved brother accused of cowardice, and the silently suffering girl he leaves behind. She will arrange the wartime marriage of two friends. And she will find the strength to console her mother in an hour of heartbreaking tragedy."Rilla of Ingleside" stands with the best of the "Anne of Green Gables" novels. It is an authentic portrayal of the Canadian home front during the cataclysm of the First World War, told with all of Montgomery's wisdom, insight, and even wit, and highly recommended to her fans.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A pleasant story that somehow falls short of satisfying By Kindle Customer Molesworth was a very popular children's writer in the Victorian period. Her stories were touted as "neo-fairy" stories because of their mixture of fantasy and realism. In this story a little girl is sent to boarding school and is extremely unhappy. Geraldine works very hard to overcome her situation, but she is never quite believable or loveable to the reader.
