Best Ebook The History of Austin County, Texas: Edited and published in 1899 as a supplement to the Bellville Wochenblatt, by William Trenkmann

This is a reproduction of the translation of the text of the article that appeared in German in The Bellville Wochenblatt. William Trenckmann, who edited the original, wrote in his introduction: For a number of years the Wochenblattmann has been concerned with the idea of publishing a special edition dedicated to the County of Austin, in Texas. Certain hindrances such as lack of time and of the article which is quite as essential to pay for printing jobs as it is to waging a war—have thus far prevented its publication. But we are convinced that this supplement, which we now send forth into the world, will be welcomed by all those who live in the county, even if much that we present here in word and picture is already familiar to them through hearsay or through actual personal experience. Many of our loyal readers who have set up their homes elsewhere will be happy to have more information about that section of the earth where Stephen F. Austin made his first settlement and where once stood the first capital of Texas. It was also the place where the earliest German pioneers in this state erected their first cabins and where, since that time, so many men and women of German blood have found homes and have helped to transform the wilderness into a fruitful garden. We have spared no effort or expense to make this booklet as rich in content and interest as possible, and we here with express our right hearty thanks to all those persons who have ably assisted us. We are fully aware that this historical sketch and topographical description of the county which, like our state capital, took its name from the Founding Impresario, cannot lay claim to completeness. Months and years of preparation and research would have been required to make it so. But we have striven within this limited frame to portray the material which is most important and worth recalling, and we believe that we have succeeded reasonably well. We hope, as they read this booklet and study the features of the aged men and women who created a new home for German culture and language on foreign soil, that our readers may gratefully remember what we their sons and grandsons owe to the German pioneers of Texas. If this aim is achieved, then the primary purpose of the little book has been accomplished.

By Amazon Customer Possibility of the flood has been forever in my mind I'm 62 now it's been there since I was a teenager. I see that the Bible stories of the past and mythology it's all a history. It's just not the history some believe. Many of the stories from the deep past have been used by religions to dominate and control of others throughout history. It's great that we can now shine light on the truth.

However, the lazy formatters didn't bother to set the poems in "poetic" style. They're just glommed together in paragraphs, making the poems very hard to enjoy.I guess this is what you should expect with "free" Kindle books. Someone at Amazon should run quality control on anything that's posted for downloading.

In August 1914, thirteen-year-old Amy was trapped on the Belgian seacoast as war was declared with Germany, alone with her younger brothers. British, resilient and feisty, she got back to occupied Brussels and began her war diaries. Amy knew Nurse Cavell and Ada Bodart, members of the secret network to get Allied soldiers across the frontier. She writes of zeppelins, food shortages, constant gunfire and spies. She confronts a 'sneering' German who demands to know where her brother is: 'I could have shot him,' she comments. Then it all changes: in 1917 her mother attacks her and Amy is moved to a Catholic boarding school nearby. Constantly in trouble for being disruptive, answering back, whistling, laughing in church and climbing onto roofs 'for fun', she longs for the love and approval of her teacher - and her estranged mother.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This Book Shines! By Vanessa Furse Jackson Miss Cavell Was Shot is a gem of a book. The window the teenaged Amy gives us on what it was like to live in German-occupied Belgium during WWI is unique and fascinating. She is at once observant, resilient and poignant in her daily recordings of the deprivations and small joys, the horrors and the mundaneness of an adolescence lived in a time of war. And the editing of her diaries by Monica Kendall is nothing short of superb. The careful, painstaking research that reveals Amy’s full story is beautifully presented, so that the cast of characters is brought alive for us, and the diaries speak with a depth they could not otherwise have achieved. Amy Hodson comes across as a strong and highly individual personality. She also speaks to us across more than 100 years as a recognizable, universal, aspiring teen, one who longs to grow up and be loved and find herself. Read this. It’s inspiring, unusual and enlightening. I highly recommend it.

This book reveals the commitment of 2 people who met and fell in love under difficult circumstances, who valued marriage and who remained true to their word. The setting is primarily in England and the author does a good job developing her characters and describing war torn London. Anyone who had a parent or grandparent in this war would appreciate the accuracy of how the culture and world view of this generation is depicted.Great read!

By Kelly J Snook This is an excellent resource for anyone who is considering getting involved in the touring music world. I am new to touring and wish SO much I had read this book before beginning, rather than at the very end of, my first tour! The author's insights are spot on and would benefit even the seasoned tour professional. The book is a quick read but is dense with information and offered in an honest, accessible, and personal way with a generosity of spirit clearly laid out for the benefit of the reader. I am hoping there will be follow-up books with more little gems of wisdom like the ones here. One thing I've learned is that in touring, little tiny things that may seem trivial can actually result in someone disappearing from the tour with little or no warning and without fanfare, so some of the smallest details in this book are the most important, relevant, and possibly even career-making or career-breaking. I imagine the author has plenty more advice up his sleeve and can't wait to see what comes up next.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. it's like a how to manual for being a touring tech ... By STEPHEN S. I purchased this book, (as I am a touring tech with over 20 years experience,) as I was curious to see What the author had to say on a very closed doors and hard to get into job field.I was very pleasantly surprised at how open and informative this book is, it's like a how to manual for being a touring tech and it's written by a genuine professional, with years of experience out in the field, not just a reporters view. The author writes the book like a good friend who is passing on valuable information and tips to you and it's a quick easy read.If you are serious about doing this as a profession, do your self a favour and get this book , I wish it had been around 20 years ago when I was starting out

You are not going to get this information anywhere else. And, this book is written by someone who is at the top of the game today - it's fresh and modern info, hot off the press. Kenny tours with the biggest acts in Country and Rock. So, right now he is "Tech'ing" in the biggest venues in the World - stadiums and arenas. But this book brings you up from the smaller places he played when he was making his way into the business. So even if your place in the Touring Tech world is just small clubs for now, this book has something for you. If you have thought about doing this kind of work but you have no idea how to begin, this book is for you. So, if your dream is to rise to the top of the Touring Tech world, I have some advice for you - cut years off the journey and get there faster by making "Back Stage Pass" your bible. Kenny has already been though the trials and tribulations - be smart and learn from his experience. The book is insanely well organized and it's a fantastic read. Don't miss this one!

The City of West Bend got its name from its location on a large westward-reaching bend of the Milwaukee River. Settled mainly by German immigrants in the 1840s, the city was bestowed with leaders possessing entrepreneurial know-how. West Bend became an international center of manufacturing with companies such as the West Bend Aluminum Company, Enger-Kress Pocket Book Company, and Gehl Brothers Manufacturing. Knowing how to work hard, West Bends residents also played hard with a booming downtown area, local sports teams, parks, and cultural entertainment. Recent decades have seen a decline of local industry, but unlike many communities, the historic downtown continues to thrive with shops, restaurants, and lively cultural offerings. Home to unique architecture such as Old Courthouse and Jail, beautiful Victorian homes, and the new Museum of Wisconsin Art, West Bend continues to thrive and take pride in its past while looking to the future.

Insightful stories of our greatest generation By Fred the great Angela Horn has captured the essence of the World War II experience as seen through the eyes of her father and his compatriots. Through the intimate interview process, the reader is transported back to the 1940's and sees day to day life through the eyes of brave young men. This book is definitely worth reading and will inspire the reader for more information. I look forward to Angela's next book

Gold, Ph.D. I found myself thinking of my own father during this turbulent time of war and my mother waiting for my dad to return. Ms. Horn brings to light the first person accounts of several young men and their recollections of what it was like to be all over the globe and part of a secret service of men whose patriotism and dedication guided us into the nation we are today. This account is a gentle tribute to the authors' father, a deep appreciation for his role in WWII and an expression of the sincere love and admiration she has for him. Well worth reading!

This book seeks to bring coherence to two of the most studied periods in British history, Caroline non-conformity (pre-1640) and the Puritan revolution (post-1642). It does so by focusing on the pivotal years of 1638-44 where debates around non-conformity within the Church of England morphed into a revolution between Parliament and its king. Parliament knew that one of the most destabilizing elements of the body politic was an inchoate national church, where heterodoxy presented as much of a threat as prelacy. Saddled with the responsibility of re-defining England's church, Parliament called its Westminster assembly of divines to debate and define the content and boundaries of that new church. Typically this period has been studied as either an ecclesiastical power struggle between Presbyterians and independents, or as the harbinger of modern religious toleration. This book challenges those assumptions and provides and entirely new framework for understanding one of the most important moments in British history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Unique and Outstanding Book By Ryan Mcgraw This is likely the most significant work written to date on the thorny subject of church power in British Reformed orthodoxy. Powell focuses on debates over the nature of church power from 1638–44 (2). He aims to redefine and to clarify categories related to debates over church government at the Westminster Assembly. He does so by treating primarily the views of the so-called five “dissenting brethren” in relation to the Scottish commissioners, setting both in their historical context. This is such a paradigm shifting work that, in spite of its price, it is one of the most important books that anyone interested the Westminster Assembly and its theology could take up and read. It shows how the Westminster debates over church government were not as neat and tidy as many have assumed and how the question of church polity fits into the broader context of Reformed orthodox theology. This book challenges historical conceptions of Presbyterian polity at the Westminster Assembly. Powell modifies the common narrative of church government debates at Westminster, which often treats these debates as an exercise in how long it took the assembly to fall in line with the Scots. Instead, Powell shows how the Scots achieved a high degree of unity with the Apologists (Congregationalists who were known later as the Dissenting Brethren) over the question of the seat of church power. While English Presbyterians in the assembly were divided over whether church power was seated in the local church and was then communicated to presbyteries, or whether church power was seated in presbyteries and was communicated to particular churches, the Apologists and the Scots agreed that Christ communicated church power to the congregation as a whole and to its elders directly and in two distinct ways. According to men such as Rutherford on the Presbyterian side and Burroughs on the side of the Apologists, the only significant difference that existed between them resided in the power of synods, especially with respect to excommunication. The Apologists denied that synods could execute this censure while the Scots affirmed that they could. However, many English Presbyterians opposed both the Scots and the Apologists by denying that the elders of local congregations could excommunicate members without a synodical act. This meant that both the Scots and the Apologists held minority positions at the assembly. At the end of the day, the real “grand debate” at the assembly was not over Presbyterianism vs. Congregationalism, but between the assembly as a whole and Erastian opponents, which included debates among Presbyterians over the proper seat of church power. The Scots held the tenuous position of attempting to accommodate the Apologists on the one side and of preventing the fracture of the Presbyterian majority on the other side over the question of the seat of church power. The Scots agreed with the Apologists over church power, but they agreed with the Presbyterian majority over the governmental power of presbyteries. This work gives us a unique window into debates at the Westminster Assembly. Part of the reason why Powell’s research creates such a seismic shift in how we read assembly debates over church government lies in the sources that he used. Previous research relied on pamphlets written by authors outside of the assembly rather than on records of assembly debates and the writings of the Westminster divines. Powell guides readers by the hand through the assembly debates in a way that makes history come to life. The reader can virtually feel the tension in the air and recognize the temperaments and personalities of the divines in their proceedings. He shows that all primary sources are not equal and that we gain a different picture of events when we follow the actors in the story instead of the spectators in the crowd commenting on the play. This does not mean that his historiography is flawless. In comparing the polity of the famed Gisbertus Voetius (1589–1676) with the Congregationalists at Westminster and in highlighting Voetius’s enthusiastic endorsement of the Congregationalist John Cotton’s Keys of the Kingdom (1644), Powell makes almost no appeal to primary sources. He also repeatedly refers to the Netherlands as “Holland,” confusing two Dutch provinces with the entire region. However, his treatment of the vital subject of church government at Westminster gives a picture of the development of varied versions of Presbyterian polity that Presbyterian ministers in particular bypass to their great detriment. This book is just the kind of history that Presbyterian churches need. It forces readers to listen to the Westminster divines and to assess them on their own terms and in their own world. Modern readers may not always like what they find in reading books like this one. Yet this work is necessary to help explain what the Westminster Assembly did and did not intend to say in its affirmation of Presbyterian polity. Presbyterians were not all cut from the same cloth and not all Congregationalists were as far away from some forms of Presbyterianism as we may tend to think. Above all, this book provides us with an admirable example of how the Scots and the Apologists pursued catholic unity in their theology without threatening their distinctives. It also provides us with a model of doctrinal precision, spiritual maturity, and catholic charity that has potential to serve the church well today. This review appeared in Ordained Servant Online, December 2015

The small Island of St Helena, flung away in mid-South Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world – its loneliness breeding a phlegmatic populace as famous for friendliness as the island itself is known for stunning scenery and a captivating history. Small wonder, then, that the author – in love with St Helena from an early age – resolved to buy a second family home there in 1999, and found herself living there for nearly ten years while her family “commuted” back and forth from Cape Town on the RMS St Helena - the only ship that serves the island. Running concurrently with her unusually eventful tenure, was the British Government’s determination to build St Helena’s first airport, and the litany of those frustrating consultations is described with candour, while colourful splashes of the island’s history, modest environmental offerings and breath-taking beauty are painted into day-to-day happenings. All this is woven into an intimate family story of a treasured house, the island’s day-to-day demands, and coming to terms with a remote lifestyle – a forthright tale told with both humour and some measures of angst as she boldly endeavours to ‘jump the cracks’ that shockingly appear is this idyllic place as time moves on.

It is a narrative of the author's personal experiences and enduring love for one of the remotest places on this planet- St. Helena. Once strategically important on the Sea route to the East, it has hosted Sir Francis Drake, Charles Darwin, astronomers, botanists, prisoners (from Napoleon to Boers and Zulu King, Dinizulu),and a large garrison. Slaves, rescued from the Slave traders, swelled the island's population as did Chinese, Africans, Indians, Dutch, British and other ex pats.. The author seamlessly interpolates historical and other facts into the accounts of the island's daily life, isolated from mobile phones, ATM's and the challenges of survival on a rock in mid South Atlantic. Her affection for the people and passion for the house, which she bought and restored, is revealed by an enchanting sense of humour It keeps one reading with laughter as she describes the idiosyncrasies and tribulations of life on an island "lost in time". The author has a gift for description - be it people, birds, houses, events which makes one a participant. Whether as armchair traveler or as someone planning a visit to St. Helena, this is a must- read .book.

Great insight into life on a really remote island By Amazon Customer I was already curious about the Atlantic Ocean St Helena Island, so this book ticked all the boxes. It gives a very personal account of life there, from the perspective of someone from the "outside". I know of some suburbs hereabouts, in Cape Town, which live by the same (il)logic.....we do it this way...or we don't do it that way.....not because it's practical or reasonable, but because that's the way it's always been done. I don't know that I could conform enough to live on St Helena ...lbut I'd love to visit!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Lovely! By Hello Happy I loved this gorgeous book where Pride and Prejudice is shown on 14 panels of 39 x 9 inch cardstock poster, folded and enclosed in a thin and lovely case. Each panel has a striking, full-color, illustration, rendered in gouache and pen. The illustrations are charming, and I found the text, however brief, descriptive and moving, especially when echoed with such lovely illustrations, as Elizabeth learns to overcome her pride, while Mr. Darcy regrets his initial prejudice toward the less fortunate Bennet family. It is all well-made, printed in very high quality, with the case featuring glossy highlights. It would make a lovely gift, for children or anyone who loves the book, and may be used as a picture book or as home decor.

This is a must-have for collectors, or even younger children who are interested in the classics. The illustrations are fantastic and they do capture the bones of the story. It's a unique way to tell a story and as someone who collects copies of Pride and Prejudice, I'm glad to have this in my collection.

I love the accordion style of the book too, makes it more interesting to pick up and look at. My only complaint is that some of the subtitles/text cover the images and the whole reason for buying this (and I assume the publishing of it) was for the art. Otherwise a beautiful rendition of a classic story.

And the stories are fascinating. The pictures are stunning. An incredible glimpse into the world as it was travelled in 1898.

Excerpt from Account of the Russian Discoveries Between Asia and America: To Which Are Added the Conquest of Siberia, and the History of the Transactions and Commerce Between Russia and ChinaThe late Russian Discoveries between Asia and America have, for some time, engaged the attention of the curious; more especially since Dr. Robertson's admirable History of America has been in the hands of the public. In that valuable performance the elegant and ingenious author has communicated to the world, with an accuracy and judgement which so eminently distinguish all his writings, the most exact information at that time to be obtained, concerning those important discoveries. During my stay at Petersburg, my inquiries were particularly directed to this interesting subject, in order to learn if any new light had been thrown on an article of knowledge of such consequence to the history of mankind. For this purpose I endeavoured to collect the respective journals of the several voyages subsequent to the expedition of Beering and Tschirikoff in 1741, with which the celebrated Muller concludes his account of the first Russian navigations.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An excellent summary with extracts of several journals from the early period of Russian occupation and exploration of Alaska. Wired Love: A Romance of Dots and Dashes, by Ella Cheever Thayer, is an enchanting book about a love affair between two telegraphers in America, code names 'N' and 'C'. The couple fall victim to the dangers that internet chat-room users are faced with today: they begin to fall for the stranger on the other end of the line without knowing what they look like, who they are, or anything much about them. For the first few chapters, 'N', known as Nattie, has no idea if the grapher on the end of the line is a man or a woman. She leads a double life - her 'online' life and her humdrum normal life. She has her real, 'visible' friends, and this increasingly special 'invisible' friend. The humor in this novel is touching and farcical at times, and I found this to be one of the most charming aspects of the book. Charming is the perfect word for it as you fall in love with the characters and delight in the myriad of misunderstanding that makes this novel so highly cinematic.

It also is a glimpse into the lives of young working women, in the early 20th century. You will be able to picture what it would be like, living in a boarding house-with its pros and cons. For a clean, quick read, to enjoy in quiet moments, this novel fits the bill!

Transends Time By Southern Housewife This is an older story so the reader has to adjust their mindset to terms like "making love" meaning flirting and there's also the issue of a large part of the plot revolving around them being telegraph operators and flirting over the wire. But still it's very relevant because readers can imagine sneaking to a love interests floor at work because we want to see them, or putting ourselves in their path etc- different technology but it still rings true. The two main characters were well developed and likeable, but I'd have liked to have seen some of the supporting cast either better developed or just left out. This story follows the very sweet model of Jane Austen where heroine meets the man, circumstances/misunderstandings get in the way and then we have a resolution. Well worth the read.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. surprisingly good By Beesocks I bought this book to read on my kindle because it was free (public domain) It is a surprisingly good read. I very much enjoyed the romance between N and C. Its very well written and I loved the characters. The story is built around young telegraph operator Nattie, who begins a flirtation "over the wire" with the mysterious Clem at a telegraph station some miles away. Along with Nattie and Clem there are all of the interesting characters who live at Nattie's boarding house, the dashing singer Cyn, the artist Jo, clumsy Quimby who is hopelessly in love with Nattie, along with various other tenants and landladies. Some of the most interesting parts are the way the romance parallels today's modern technologies. Nattie and Clem meet online so to speak, and speculation is made that one day lovers will be able to have a device in their pockets that will allow them to communicate by voice whenever they wish. Pretty neat for a book written in the late 1800s.Very sweet and romantic story that I really enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would!

By connie I really enjoyed the the story line, but I would skip some chapters because they would drag on and on, I did want to know what happened in the end so I keep reading and skipping through to the end.
