Some people, without doubt, are born with a deep instinct for carrying a cane; some consciously acquire the habit of carrying a cane; and some find themselves in a position where the matter of carrying a cane is thrust upon them. Canes are carried in all parts of the world, and have been carried—or that which was the forefather of them has been carried—since human history began. Indeed, a very fair account of mankind might be made by writing the story, of its canes. And nothing that would readily occur to mind would more eloquently express a civilisation than its evident attitude toward canes.

Entertaining and literate observations of life By Charles van Buren This 1918 work contains well written, literate, interesting and sometimes humorous essays on a variety of subjects including walking sticks, fish marketing, walking journeys, wearing hats, literary reviews, death and obituaries, attending art exhibitions and many more. The connecting thread being the observations of life. Some begin as one thing and segue effortlessly into something else entirely. The essay entitled A Town Constitutional is a good example. Holiday was, in his lifetime, a noted essayist, instructor and literary editor.

Blankenship I ordered this up on my Kindle simply because the subject, found in the title, was about waling sticks, or canes. I am one of those throwbacks who should probably have lived a hundred or so years ago when it comes to canes or walking sticks...I love the things, collect them and indeed, have been making them for years.I enjoyed every word of the essay written back in 1918 concerning walking sticks. The author gives us a nice history and stresses the joy of actually using the things. I am one of those people who simply cannot walk or take a hike with out a good cane so I felt right at home.Imagine my delight though that there were quite a number of essays in this small volume covering subjects as attending an art showing, on being a fish reporter, the pleasures of taking a journey (according to the author the only true journey is one you take by walking and walking only...my kind of guy, on wearing hats, on writing literary reviews (disagreed with the author here but hey...to each his own),, writing about death and writing obituaries and a plethora of other sort of off beat subjects. These essays are well written, well researched and indeed, some have a twinkle of a humor sprinkled here and there throughout. The art of writing essays is one we have slowly lost over the years which is a true pity because we are all missing some very god reading by no having more collections available and no new essays being written such as in older times. We have lost a lot I fear.I highly recommend this one to anyone who simply enjoys good writing and a rather off beat view of life.
