Excerpt from Through Siberia and Manchuria by RailThis short account of my journey from London to Shanghai by way of the Siberian Railway was at first intended for private circulation only, in order to meet the enquiries of numerous personal friends. Now, however, that war has broken out between Russia and Japan, and that it may be years before this, the longest railway in the world, is again open to international traffic, I feel that any information, however slight, concerning so stupendous an undertaking, as well as about the remote region which it traverses, may be of interest to the general public.I wish to emphasize that much of what is herein described was seen only from the windows of a moving train, and must therefore be lacking in that accuracy and detail which closer inspection could alone insure. The Russian words "KTO HAETb?" on the cover signify "who goes there"?, and the Chinese characters represent my surname. The Russian cross at the end, is that of the original Greek Church.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great travelogue of a by-gone era. By Flower At a time when most people could not afford travel these books provided entertainment and insight to those who wished they had the opportunity to travel. This writer provided some very astute observations on the state of Russia just prior to the outbreak of hostilities with Japan. Many of the authors predictions proved true from a historical prospective but his daily observations of Russia and Siberia are colorful and entertaining as well as insightful.

Interesting, seems authentic By ttmadison If you're interested in the Trans-Siberian railroad experience, this book will give you an overview from an independent traveler who stops along the way and writes about each region. It's not a travel book per se, so if you're planning a trip, you will need other resources. Somewhat depressing is all the poverty in Central Southern Siberia.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Of limited interest By R. Thomson The author devotes most of the book to a description of the largely rural scenery he observed from the train's window. He displays little interest in his fellow passengers or in the train itself, and none in the political situation of the day.
