A story of the Obama family, three dynamic Kenyan women, and their impact on an evolving culture. How societies handle the challenges of resources, population, and climate change are contrasted with the role of Apis Mellifera and Apis Scutellata, the European and African honeybees. How does the queen bee regulate her hive, and how does the colony regulate the queen? The biology of bees and humans is seen to be interrelated in the adventures of novice beekeepers working with hunter foraging tribes. The tales of mothers and wild bees leads to a metaphor of how Kenyans and Americans build better friendships and learn to work together.

And of course there is his love of all humans and all bees By Amazon Customer Richard Godfrey has mastered the art of story telling while combining deep ecology, deep sociology and a sensitive understanding of Kenya politics and personal relationships at all levels of th social strata. This is simply a masterpiece of travel and adventure literature and an amazingly insightful description of African history, ecology and politics. And of course there is his love of all humans and all bees.

The author explores the organism we know as mankind (womankind) through the lens of foreign aid and in the process introduces us to some remarkable characters. Through years of volunteering his services as an oncologist in Kenya, he has befriended beekeepers and bee hunters, opportunists and deep ecologists, politicians and community organizers, doctors and patients, and some amazing women, including Barack Obama’s grandmother. This is a story of economic and community development that has it’s feet on the ground and it’s seat on a motorcycle, kicking up dust as the author takes us on one adventure after another. In the end, without really knowing it, you’ll find that you’ve looked behind the statistics into the way foreign affairs are felt by Kenya's people and budding institutions. As always, there are no easy answers to Kenya’s pressing needs, yet little by little, year by year, relationships are formed and the work gets done. And (spoiler) a hospital gets built. And the bees keep buzzing in Mama Sarah Obama’s mango tree. Now you'll have to read it.

I was amazed that he was able to weave together so many disparate elements - post-colonial Kenya, Kenya politics, NGOs, the stories of three remarkable women, motherhood, Mother Earth, a strong plea for intelligent husbandry of the environment, bees and bee-keeping, super organisms, whether mankind can be thought of as a super organism similar to a colony of bees, surgery, the surgeon's mindset, AIDS - all with humor, suspense, and excellent story-telling.Paul Butler, MD
