About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. How about an Aristocrat and a Democrat? And what of the sneaky Nihilist? Well, if this sounds like a recipe for chaos, you have hit the nail right on the head. And with chaos comes humor, and with humor comes, well, a pleasant opportunity to reflect on all the facets of our mixed up humanity, all carefully delineated with 1800's precision. Our story begins with Queen Mab (see Romeo and Juliet), the British ex-pat who has had a lovely life on the isolated and primitive island of Samoa, but is disturbed by an invasion of British missionaries and conquesting Germans. Distraught and distressed, that very Mab rides a seagull to return to her British homeland to see how things have fared during her 200 year (more or less) absence. What she finds is that humanity is more irrational now than ever, with several philosophically distinctive groups vying to prove that they indeed know everything. In the end, I think I've found the roots of the Monte Python charm, hidden in the British classic. I found this to be especially true after having realized that this was written in the golden age of dynamite, and that blowing things up (or the threat thereof) was a central humorous theme.Overall, I really had a hard time believing that the humor here was not modern, because it really felt that way many times. And I mean this in the very best sense.Generally, I feel like this is a MUST READ for all students of philosophy, sociology, British history, British humor, British historical politics and lovers of books about Queen Mab.Four stars because the theme gets a little old for those of us who aren't students of philosophy, even though the story is really short. But still, very funny.Recommended.
