Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Irvin S. Cobb, ‘Roughing it De Luxe.’ “Cobb is a marvelous writer. The section about his travels in the Grand Canyon needs to be read by every person who likes both travel and humor, because it’s hysterically funny. Cobb comes across in some ways like an early Bill Bryson. Highly recommended.”Avis Black Cobb joined the staff of the magazine Saturday Evening Post during 1911, and covered the Great War for the magazine. At the same time, he wrote a book about his experiences, published during 1915, titled Paths Of Glory. After a second visit to France to cover the Great War, Cobb publicized the achievements of the unit known as theHarlem Hellfighters, most notably, Croix de Guerre recipients Henry Lincoln Johnson and Needham Roberts. His article “Young Black Joe,” published on August 24, 1918 in theSaturday Evening Post and later republished in Cobb’s book, The Glory of the Coming, highlighted the discipline and courage displayed by black American soldiers fighting in Europe during World War I. The three-page article and half-page photograph reached a national audience of more than two million readers, and was widely reprinted in the black press.

I had never heard of this book nor Mr. Cobb as an author. But I quickly found I could not put it down! Mr. Cobb's accounts of traveling out west, first to Arizona and the Grand Canyon and then on to San Diego, Tia Juana, Los Angeles, San Francisco and finally on through Utah and Colorado are not only very humorus but as timely as if they were written today, instead of 1913, when the book was first published. Anyone wanting to read a very light hearted account of an Easterner's travels in the West at the turn of the last century (or anyone having ever lived in the West) will find this well worth the time spent to read. I plan to find and ready more of Mr. Cobb's works.

Everybody thought so then and you'll think so today if you read his stuff. He was a famous humorist in an era of famous humorists. He is still funny and his books read easily today...especially since many of them are available for free download to Kindles and similar reading devices. ROUGHING IT DE LUXE is a series of essays on vacation travel wherein Cobb makes fun of everybody in range, particularly himself. Within the humor, however, you get glimpses of life in the 1920s, about the way people presented themselves and interacted. Lots of laughs.

He writes rich characters from the train and describes great moments within the Canyon itself. If you have someone down and out or in the hospital, and you are sitting with them....this is the book to pick up and verbally read....and accent verbally the wonderful thrills of travel. Cobb is a natural guy at humor and sees little things that people miss out on. Strongly recommend the book and take your time....it is worth the effort.
