A masterpiece By Devorah Brooks Mr. Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White was introduced to me as the literary ancestor...the forerunner to what we would refer to today as a suspense and mystery novel. It is the first of it's kind! As a masterpiece written in 1850, it is so well crafted ...loaded with twists and turns as complex secrets are revealed, it is almost impossible to put down. It doesn't matter whether Mr. Collins is describing a boathouse or a manor house...incidental or key characters; or setting down a monologue, you're held in the author's grasp.

For Suspense Freaks By Kevin Written in 1850 and generally regarded as the first "suspense" novel, "Woman in White" is a treasure of Victorian manners, hidden motives, nefarious characters, feckless heroes, and naive and not-so-naive heroines. If you want to know where Ross MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler got their chops, this is one very good place to start.

I had never heard of this author but the reviews and storyline and editorials seemed promising. I just finished this book today and my overall feeling in regards to the author's writing, the plot, the character development and his descriptive ability in bringing the characters and the geography into a highly visual, realtime presence is outstanding. You don't imagine his characters or places, you actually see them. His style is clear, concise, not overly verbose and like many have said before, easier to read than Dickens. This is a book that draws you in at the start and draws you in deeper from one chapter to the next. His ability to keep all the characters and events in a meaningful flow without confusion, is par excellence. Though I have liked many books, it is not often that I close one to find myself feeling exhilarated by the experience. I have enjoyed reading many, yes. But to have been enthralled with one is so very rare. This is one of those books that you will remember, not vaguely, but thoroughly, 20 years down the road and one day you will pick it up again and still feel the same way when you've finished. I absolutely recommend this book to those who enjoy reading mystery set in the Victorian period.I'm not going to say how it ends. I hate reviews that are spoilers. I'm only going to say it starts with meeting a woman in white, you aren't going to be skipping pages, you're not likely to be bored, and when you have read the last line, there will be a wee bit of sadness in saying goodbye to a thoroughly engrossing and well-written story. This won't be a book you will want to discard.I immediately purchased Delphi's Wilke Collins Anthology (it contains this book too) without hesitation. BUY THIS BOOK. you WILL NOT be disappointed.
