Review "The Peppers' good spirits, their love for each other, and their pleasure in simple homemade fun still charms me.... I wish them a long and happy life of at least another hundred years." --Betsy Byars

From the Inside Flap Five Little Peppers and How They GrewMargaret SidneyPolly and Ben Pepper are full of secret plans to surprise Mamsie. But it's hard to come up with ideas for presents when there isn't even enough money for the children to go to school.Since their father died, the five Pepper children and their mother have been living in poverty, with only potatoes and brown bread for supper. Ben chops wood to help support the family, and Polly looks after the little ones while their mother earns what she can by sewing. The Peppers are so poor, they've never even had a Christmas. But from measles to monkeys, through bad times and good, the cozy kitchen in the little brown house rings with laughter and hope. Then, just when a misadventure nearly leads to tragedy, a boy named Jasper King tumbles into their lives. Can good fortune be far behind?

The "Peppers" get better as they go along By Privacy, Please Initially I was a tad shocked to see so many modern readers reviewing the "Five Little Peppers", but on second thought, the Peppers aren't far removed from the eras of "Little Women" and Laura Ingalls Wilder, and are only a little older than early 1900's children's classics like "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" and "Anne of Green Gables", so I guess it's not that unusual that people are still interested in the Peppers. "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" is the classic rags-to-riches tale of a poor-but-good family who, through hard work, kindness and general positivity, manage to get by until through a fortuitous chain of events, they attract the attention and help of a rich man and his extended family. It contains all the melodramatic stuff one would expect to find in an old-timey kiddie serial: poverty forcing the kids to drop out of school and work for their bread, diseases that nearly maim or kill, hairbreadth escapes from villains, and the children working together to celebrate a birthday, Christmas and other special occasions, all on a very limited budget - at least until Daddy Warbucks, I mean rich old Mr. King, whisks them all (including mother Mamsie) off to his mansion in the city. While Mamsie takes in sewing, the oldest boy, Ben (11) does odd jobs to bring in extra money, while oldest girl Polly (10) cooks, cleans and minds the three younger children, including baby Phronsie (3) who is always saying "cute" baby things, making a pest of herself, or wandering off. It's a little weird how the two oldest children almost always act like little adults but the next youngest child, who's 9, acts much more like an actual child. Also unnerving that no one ever scolds baby Phronsie or loses patience with her, even though she was on my last nerve by about the third chapter. And whenever she cries or looks the least bit sad, everybody drops everything and runs to make it better. I realize Victorian literature idolized babies even when mischievous, but it gets a bit much at times. Also, as others have noted, the writing style in this Peppers book in particular is way overexcited and the kids scream, cry, faint, drop crockery on the floor in shock, or dance with joy at every little thing. It's understandable over something big, like Christmas, or Joel nearly dying of the measles, or Polly getting a wonderful gift that she really needs, or Phronsie being rescued from kidnappers or burglars, but by the end, when the children are crying because Polly has been delayed in returning from an errand to the store, it's just getting ridiculous. The kids also talk in a weird patois that is probably supposed to sound like children who have received little education, but doesn't make sense because their mother doesn't talk that way, nor do most of the adults (save one) with whom they regularly interact.I wish this book had gone into a little more detail, as the Laura Ingalls books do, about how some of the dishes that the children cook (cooking and baking being a large part of the action) were made. I also found it strange that the children's father had apparently been dead only three years, yet is never mentioned by any of the family or otherwise discussed in the book except briefly in passing at the very end. You never find out what he did for a living, how he died, how the family's standard of living changed as a result of the death, or whether the family members who remember him (which presumably would include the mother and the three oldest children) even miss him at all. This had me wondering if the father had been a bad provider or spent all his time at sea or what. All in all, this is probably the most boring of the Five Little Peppers books, which get better as they go on since the children get older and more interesting/less babyish, and Mr. King's money opens the door to more fun activities and adventures. However, if you're going to read the Peppers series you probably need to start with this book so you'll know all the characters and the origins of the Peppers for future reference. As a child, I started with "Five Little Peppers Midway" which includes not only the five Pepper children but also their friend Jasper King, various cousins, school friends, and townspeople who were first introduced in "...And How They Grew", and references to the Peppers' old "little brown house" and I was pretty hopelessly confused about who was who and what was what and how the Peppers ended up living with the Kings, etc. Word of warning: be careful what edition you pay money for, because e-text versions are available online for free.

I am now in my 30's but I find myself reading it from time to time when I long for a simpler time. I love how this sweet family stays positive and loves each other through everything life throws at them. It is an amazing book that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Here I am at the ripe old age of 71, and it's lost none of its charm. It is best read with a plate of oatmeal cookies.
