3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book for more in depth detail on the Thirty Years' War By Kindle Customer This was a very good book to read about the Thirty Years' War. I have read numerous other books on this topic but this one gave me the most in depth look at specific key events such as the second defenestration of Prague and the events leading up to the assassination of Wallenstein. Although it is not an easy book to read, it is well worth the time. It does cover some battle descriptions such as White Mountain but concentrates more on religion and politics of the time period. I would recommend reading this book for more detailed information about specific Thirty Years' War events. A good overall understanding of this conflict would be desirable prior to reading this book (i.e. The Thirty Years' War 1618 - 1648 by Samuel Gardiner) . However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. No specifics By L. Stepelevich Alright, Schiller was a genius, and a great poet, but when it comes to history he fails. His History of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1848) is well written, but for anyone looking for dates and specifics among the myriad historical events alluded to, little can be found. It simply leads to frustrated confusion, at least for me, to read passing references to varies decrees, people, and events without noting any dates or specifics. There are no references or footnotes in the text, either by author or translator. Others might think this a good work, but I found it disappointing.

A good account by brilliant observer By dan Leifel Three hundred years ago there was a war in thee “cock pit “ of Europe, the ramifications of which have been felt ever since. This war, for all its devastation in Germany, can be seen as the beginning of the end, not only of the Holy Roman Empire, but also of what came to be known 125 years later as the Ancien Regime. To see it through the eyes of Schiller, perhaps the greatest German intellectual his age is a treat.
