Neil Goldman is a struggling author who goes to a second hand store for cheap entertainment and maybe a bit of inspiration. At the Second Chance he finds “the sweetest piece of inspiration one could ever hope to find,” an old briefcase. Imagining the many places the old satchel has been and the stories it could tell, Neil takes his prize home and goes into wild speculation only to find that it’s Satchel who has chosen Neil to write his story. Follow this epic tale of romance, adventure, and struggle as the great slave Cobb tries to escape his slavery to find freedom and his scattered and sold family. Follow the march of time through the Civil War and the golden age of invention. Fly with Satchel and Cobb’s grandson into a world war, where Satchel finds his own enslavement. Satchel eventually lands in the hands of a simple child who teaches him more than most of the great and powerful men of Satchel’s history.

His characters are well developed. His plot takes you where you least expect. Satchel is a friend we would all be proud of having. As with all of Don's books, I couldn't put it down, but hated to see it end. Thank you, Don.

I liked Mc'Allister's 1st two books By Ron O'Brien I liked Mc'Allister's 1st two books, but I loved his last 2 - "The Art of Freezing Pickles," & "Satchel at the Second Chance." Being a huge fan of stories about the Civil War era, "Satchel" is my personal favorite. NOT being a fan of implausible subject matter, I almost didn't read the book when I found out that Satchel is a briefcase who talks. Since I enjoyed "Freezing Pickles" so much, I decided to give this new book a chance, assuming that I wouldn't read beyond 3-4 chapters. However, the author's skill in personifying Satchel, quickly won me over. The development of McAllister's characters in all of his books displays the author's skill, creativity, & intelligence, as a unique writer, & Satchel's personality does not fall short in comparison to McAllister's truly human characters. My favorite part of the book is the story about the white salmon, but that's all I will say about it bec. I don't want to ruin future readers' 'sure to smile' reaction to this part in the book. Satchels tells a story about a man named, Cobb, & the more I read about this man, the more I grew to admire & respect him, especially his courageous, never-wavering, integrity. True heroes are hard to find in novels these days, but Cobb is the epitome of my idea of a true hero. The portrayal of Cobb's personality is, yet, another example example of McAllister's ability to make the characters in his books fascinating - most likely bec. his character are often complex, multi-dimensional people. Whether you are a fan of romance, suspense, drama, action, mystical, etc. types of books, you will enjoy McAllister's stories bec. he incorporates all of those genres into his books. McAllister's ability to write with dignity, imagination, grace, & poignancy, increases with each new book he writes. I am anxiously awaiting his next book bec. I know I won't be disappointed!
