About the Author Born in Panama, the author, Laura Jeannette Gau Stone, graduated from Panama Canal College, studied two years of accounting at Universidad de Panama and two years at Harvard University Extension in the writing program. Raised in the rural town of Arraijan among her Barcenas family she tasted the joys and struggles of the poor and developed a passion for agro-forestry. Laura Jeannette has been married to a West Point Officer for 50 years. In 1984 the Department of Agriculture of Rutgers University hired her to set up their offices in Panama City. Their Agriculture technicians worked with farmers. When Noriega evicted the technicians from Panama, Laura Jeannette’s dislike for tyranny intensified. The first dictator Torrijos had already expelled the US Peace Corps. Their three daughters studied at a Panama parochial school, and when the Panama Civil Crusade organized nonviolent demonstrations against the dictator, the girls took part, were arrested and the brutality nearly destroyed the family.

The story that all American's should read to understand Panama before JUST CAUSE By Tim Fitzpatrick Laura Jeannette Gau Stone has done an outstanding job painting the picture of what it was like to live under the Noriega dictatorship in Panama in the 1980s. Her portrait reveals a deep passion for truth, liberty and freedom that drove her and many Panamanians to resist the culture of self promotion and corrupt power at great sacrifice to them and their families. It is a story of Catholic faith that sustained her, her daughters and was a life line to the people. No reading about that period in history and the reasons that led President George H.W. Bush to also resist Noriega and ultimately liberate Panama can be complete without understanding the depth of despair reached in Panama and Laura provides that understanding. In 1990 I was involved in the planning for and launch of the JUST CAUSE airborne assault into Panama. I thought I knew how bad Noriega was then but did not know the extent of his evil until reading "Deported Colonel".I was privileged to work for COL Stone as a brand new 2LT assigned to his PSYOP Battalion. He and his wife exhibited the same kindness, commitment and compassion to all that visited them that they demonstrated during these hard times in panama, and both are true leaders.

Truth is greater than fiction and the author's ability to make the truth read like a novel gives it something even more potent. It makes the reader able to absorb the truth through the characters and their trials. Of course, “the characters” are the author, her friends and family, as well as her enemies. I was able to feel her anguish as she dealt with unspeakable troubles, and as she tried to be the best of examples for her three daughters. I guess I shouldn’t say “unspeakable,” because those who were brave enough to protest the dictator, Noriega, his soldiers and cronies, did, in a sense, speak words that saved the country from that deplorable regime. This book made a huge impression upon me and I wish I could tell all those who fought against the oppression how brave and honorable they were. I can let the author know this, however, for which I'm grateful.

An Interesting Period of Time By Ernie Dean This is a very interesting period of time for a small country that had a dictator and other criminals under his rule and how the author takes the reader back to her life there. Laura a Panamanian who is married to a US Military Officer loves her country, loves her husband, has three children must juggle her support for all. Her husband dedicated to his career puts his wife second and struggles to balance both. The children give insight to what they went through and what they had to sacrifice.
