Defending Fortress Europe provides readers with the first English-language account of what the Germans were saying in their own words during the Normandy campaign. US Army historian Mark Reardon departs from familiar convention by combining a mixture of modern scholarship with primary source material written over 65 years ago. The primary source material consists of the record of daily activities, covering the period from 6 June to 26 July 1944, compiled by a staff officer from the 7th Army's operations and planning section. This record, known as the Kriestagebuch (Daily War Diary), served not only as a historical reference, but also as an aide-memoire for the commanding general and his staff. Material from Army Group B and OB-West opens each chapter, providing a context for the 7th Army war diary that follows. Reardon adds introductory chapters to set the scene for the combat to begin on 6 June. In the concluding chapters he describes subsequent action and analyzes Normandy in a broader perspective.

About the Author Retired Army Lt. Col. Mark J. Reardon is a senior historian at the US Army Center of Military History. Commissioned as an Armor officer in 1979 upon graduation from Loyola College of Baltimore, he served in the United States, Korea, Germany, Haiti, and Saudi Arabia. He was first assigned to the Center in 2002 as an active duty officer. Soon after retiring from the military in 2006, he rejoined the Center as a civilian historian, and he is now acting chief of the CMH Contemporary Studies Branch. Reardon is the author of Victory at Mortain: Stopping Hitler s Panzer Counteroffensive (Lawrence: University Press of Kansas, 2002); coauthor of American Iliad: A History of the 18th Infantry Regiment in World War II (Bedford, Pa.: Aberjona Press, 2004); and From Transformation to Combat: The First Stryker Brigade at War (Washington, D.C.: US Army Center of Military History, 2007). He contributed several chapters to two 2009 Center publications, A History of Innovation: U.S. Army Adaptation in War and Peace and Tip of the Spear: U.S. Army Small-Unit Actions in Iraq, 2004 2007.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. If you want to learn the story of the `other side of the hill' during the Normandy Campaign of 1944, then this book is for you! By Robert S. Rush This superb account of German operations in Normandy June-July 1944 is drawn from the captured German Seventh Army War Diary. This is not a reprise of tactical operations in Normandy, rather it details those issues and operations viewed as most important from the German perspective at army level. In providing this record of that Army's daily activities Lt. Col. Reardon adds to the growing list of operational studies on the German army's struggle in during the Normandy Campaign in summer 1944 and highlights the tensions between Seventh Army opposing the US First Army and Panzer Group West fighting the British Second Army.Reardon's methodology is excellent: opening each chapter with very comprehensive editor's notes as well as material from the Army's higher headquarters to provide context before delving into the Seventh Army's War Diary. The appendix on Luftwaffe operations over Normandy is a tour de force that could be a study in itself.I found numerous nuggets that tied together why the Seventh Army buckled under the strain. Reardon notes that Seventh Army operational oversight collapsed twice, once during the landing on 6 June and again on 25 July when the VII Corps began its breakout. Both times the Allies had attacked on a wide front that did not allow transfer or reserves and with communications with lower headquarters severely disrupted the Army headquarters ability to control the battle. Additionally, Rommel refused to see the attacks against Seventh Army as the Allied main effort, dooming the Army to a savage battle of attrition, which it could not win.I highly recommend to anyone even remotely interested in the hard fought Normandy Campaign of June-July 1944.

A Valuable Reference for World War II Europe Readers and Historians By Gilberto Villahermosa In his latest book "Defending Fortress Europe" (2012) U.S. Army Historian and published author Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Mark Reardon, of the U.S. Army's Center of Military History has provided readers and historians alike with a valuable and enduring reference. An authority on World War II, Reardon is the author of "Victory at Mortain" (2002) and coauthor of "American Iliad: The History of the 18th Infantry Regiment in World War II" (2004). Lieutenant Colonel Reardon has carefully and skillfully edited the War Diary of the German Seventh Army in Normandy for the period 6 June to 26 July to present the epic Battle of Normandy as the leaders of the Wehrmacht lived and perceived it. "Defending Fortress Europe" provides considerable insight into how a German Army of 58 divisions, expecting an Allied invasion of France and equipped with thousands of tanks and self-propelled guns, anti-tank guns and artillery pieces, was not only unable to prevent the Allies from establishing a beachhead on the Continent, but also from breaking out of that beachhead and thrusting deep into France, shattering the Germans defenders. Reardon has done his research well and his latest work provides considerable depth and breadth to the German narrative through introductory chapters, appendices, and explanatory notes on German and Allied formations and actions. His many excellent maps support the narrative and allows the reader to see the disposition of the two armies throughout the battle. And in his concluding chapters Reardon analyzes the battle of Normandy to explain the Allied victory and the German defeat. "Defending Fortress Europe" is a well written, well researched, and extremely readable work that will no doubt find a place on the bookshelves of all serious World War II buffs and historians. The book is a model of how historians can utilize the more than 2,500 manuscripts of the Foreign Military Studies collection produced by some 300 captured German Wehrmacht and SS generals after the war to present the history of the Second World War in Europe in a balanced and credible manner.

Not just a rehash of post war German officer interrogations seen in so many books on the subject. The coverage is relatively unique. Another great book by Mark Reardon.
