Greenberg in Masterpieces of Mystery and Suspense, is "considered by many scholars to be the first important espionage novel," and that in and of itself should entice modern fans of the genre or of mysteries in general to read it.Frank Burgoyne, newly rich through inheritance, falls madly and improbably in love with a beautiful but mysterious Russian and becomes unwittingly and unknowingly embroiled in an international plot punctuated by a series of murders. Burgoyne suffers several bewildering experiences, including incarcerations in Russia and England, and he is constantly questioning his love's motivations and fealty. The late nineteenth century writing style's a bit dated, the conclusion's a bit talky, and Burgoyne's doubts, motivations, and actions aren't always convincing. But these are quibbles when discussing a book that, in Greenberg's words, was "advancing the field and adding a variant whose popularity continues to the present day."The free Kindle edition has few formatting errors but there is a significant omission: the hard copy reproduces a mysterious cabalistic symbol that is found on each murder victim but the graphic is not in the Kindle edition.
