The author infuses humor into story telling and factual reporting. Little did I know of the significance of white elephants. There were touching moments in Paul's telling the story of the Synogogue. Paul's collection of Ganeshettes must be something to behold. Golf courses in Myanmar? Play golf with Paul on unusual golf courses. Character development? It feels as if you know the people Paul meets! Great book!

Paul has truly outdone himself this time (and to think this is the 1st of the 5 editions - yayy!!).With the help of this brilliant book, we get the chance to live vicariously through Paul's tales of Myanmar (a country I hope to visit in the future). I truly can't say enough good things about this edition and highly recommend it to everyone! You won't regret it.

Hannigan Paul Sochaczewski’s tales of travels in the nether regions of Asia provide that rare thing – the mid-length travel literature form. Travel writing generally comes in either sustained, book-length bouts, or short (and generally shallow) article-sized bites. But the pieces that make up each edition of Sochaczewski’s wonderful Curious Encounters of the Human Kind series (and there are nine of them in this Burmese collection) fit rather wonderfully into the space between – short enough to read in a single sitting, but long enough to allow the author space to ponder on big issues, to digress delightfully, and, as the series’ title suggests, to describe meaningful interactions with fellow humans in places far from home.This Burmese collection is a particularly enjoyable one, and Sochaczewski is on top form, dishing up his customary blend of finely-honed travel writing prose, thought-provoking ponderings on the environment, politics, history, and human nature – and a little of the sharp self-awareness that’s required to raise the best travel writing above the level of solipsism. In an account of a trek into the Burma portion of Nagaland he revealingly faces up to that most uncomfortable of traveller’s questions: “What are you doing here?”Burma has only recently opened up to tourism on a major scale, and there’s still a relatively limited amount of travel literature about the place available – most notably the books of Emma Larkin. Paul Sochaczewski’s new collection is a worthy addition to that small but growing library.
