Winston Churchill called it "the Beast." It was said to be unsinkable. More than thirty military operations failed to destroy it. Eliminating the Tirpitz, Hitler's mightiest warship, a 52,000-ton behemoth, became an Allied obsession. In The Hunt for Hitler's Warship, Patrick Bishop tells the epic story of the men who would not rest until the Tirpitz lay at the bottom of the sea. In November of 1944, with the threat to Russian supply lines increasing and Allied forces needing reinforcements in the Pacific, a raid as audacious as any Royal Air Force operation of the war was launched, under the command of one of Britain's greatest but least-known war heroes, Wing Commander Willie Tait.Patrick Bishop draws on decades of experience as a foreign war correspondent to paint a vivid picture of this historic clash of the Royal Air Force's Davids versus Hitler's Goliath of naval engineering. Readers will not be able to put down this account of one of World War II's most dramatic showdowns.

Interesting as well as informative By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson In May of 1941, the German battleship Bismarck sailed out from its Norwegian berth, and (for a short time anyway) wrecked havoc on British naval activities. When its sister ship, the Tirpitz, similarly arrived in Norway, the upper echelons of the British government and Navy were so alarmed that they immediately began plans to sink her. This is the story of the Tirpitz, what (little) it accomplished, and on the many British attempts to bring her to battle or sink her in port.Overall, I found this to be a very interesting story. In general, the Tirpitz gets very little notice in the history books, but this book focuses in on the ship, and on a number of operations by the German and British Navies. The author did do a great job of delving into the history of all of the operations against the Tirpitz, both those overt and clandestine. Also, I found the writing to be interesting as well as informative. So, if you like reading about little-known happenings in World War 2, then I think that you will like this book.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Bismarck's little-known sister ship By J. Nelson Most people haven't heard of the Tirpitz. (Frightening a lot of folks haven't heard of the Bismarck.) But it was a Frankenstein's monster that kept Winston Churchill awake at night during World War II. Bishop tells a very straightforward history of the many ways in which the Allies tried to remove this warship from the Atlantic playing board. From air raids, to miniature submarines, to suicide frogmen placing demolitions on the hull, the allies kept trying to remove this threat to the convoys going around Norway to Russia. The irony is the Tirpitz never really fought; its presence alone disrupted shipping and the threat of it sailing scattered convoys -- playing into the hands of the U-Boat wolfpacks. Bishop's writing style is adequate to the story; not the best, but certainly not the worst. Period photos are a welcome addition to the text.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Monster in hiding. By smiles The vastness of the operation, weather conditions and the battle stress by all involved make one wonder who were these men.The warship as designed and described was much bigger and more complex than I had imagined. The idea that a group of navy and air force battle squadrons spread over miles of ocean in freezing difficult conditions carried out this hunt over not hours or days but months into years was in itself beyond any normal duty..The thinking of men struggling through training that at times killed them and knowing that even if they actually made it to the mission what ever it was the chances of survival were slim was described in such a way you could feel the strain and desperation.
