By discdisease Dead Rabbits by Scott Flanigan and Brian Wood is an outstanding memoir that every American should read regardless of whether or not war memoirs are a genre that is usually read. I have read nearly 450 books about our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and I am fortunate enough to still find gems like Dead Rabbits. Well written memoirs offer us readers the unique opportunity to delve into the lives of the soldiers so that we get a true understanding of life at war. The newspapers and televised news tell us and show us what they want us to know and see. These media outlets are owned by somebody and usually that somebody tends to lean in one direction, so we get half truths and soundbites taken out of context, these memoirs are invaluable when wanting to know the factsLt. Flanigan leads Baker Company 2nd platoon known as the Dead Rabbits. He is a good looking, well educated guy who is an outstanding athlete and could have done anything he wanted to do in the workforce, BUT, he lets everybody close to him know that his goal is to "make a difference" in the world and this goal led him to the military. What an unbelievable mindset and what an honorable man Lt. Scott Flanigan is, God Bless him, we certainly need more men and women with this characteristic. This group of soldiers are responsible for destroying the different IED's in and around Dora, Baghdad in Iraq. Mr. Wood and Lt. Flanigan do an outstanding job of detailing everyday life including dead times and being involved in many battles that these soldier's go through. It is obvious that Flanigan's soldiers respect him and would do whatever it takes to complete their mission and these missions often turned into horrific and bloody battles. And if finding and destroying IED's wasn't enough of a psychological grind, this platoon was also responsible for picking up the dead bodies and remains of their men as well as those pf the enemy.What really stood out to me a about 'Rabbits was how the entire book flowed from one chapter to another, there wasn't any of that "blah" time that I often encounter when reading memoirs. And I was fascinated to "watch" these soldiers talk to one another, grow very close and be so focused and intent on doing whatever it took to complete their given task. We get to see how the entire platoon comes together and basically becomes a family that would do anything for each other including taking a bullet if necessary.I strongly recommend this book. It is not just about war but it also sheds light on personal thoughts and shows us that our soldier's are just men and women that have the same problems as all of us. The big difference between them and civilians is that we can address our issues immediately. Our soldiers many of whom are risking their own lives on a daily basis can't focus on a child being sick at home, going through a divorce, having money problems etc., they have to go to war and put all of their personal issues behind them, something that I imagine is not too easy. Lt. Flanigan and Brian Wood do an outstanding job of relating to us what is going on with the troop's while deployed. So it is not just a war memoir but a life memoir...Go get and read it, you won't be disappointed.I must say thank you to not only the author's of this book but also to Karen Matibe of Mbedzi Publishing who helped me get a copy of Dead Rabbits and who took the time to email me and chat about the book and othet books that her company publishes...just a shout out and a sincere thank you, Karen!

Winkler I grew up with an Uncle in the Marine Corps, a great deal of the friends I grew up with went to Vietnam. I have had the priviledge of training with members of elite special forces units from every branch of the military from the United States as well as numerous other countries. I have listened to countless operational debriefings regarding tactical operations across the world. The thing that often gets lost along the way is that personnel participating in these various operations are people with unique and vastly interesting takes on battle and most importantly life.Dead Rabbits brings you closer not to the war but to the operators fighting that war. Scott and Brian bring these stories in a light that gives you a facinating picture of our soldiers. This to me is the real story the politics, the read tape, the reason for various wars is at a way higher pay grade than mine. But the people following these orders; their outlooks, perspectives, friendships. camaraderie, and ways to make the best out of any situation is an important story which should be shared, and I am better for it.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Read - Courage, Honor and Patriotism at its Best By Debra E. Mungo This is the first book I have read about the Iraq War. While I dont typically read stories of war and conflict - it came highly recommended. Now I tell all my friends to read this book. It will give you a glimps into the daily lives of our soldiers abroad, their relationships with one another and the Iraqi people, their patriotism and courage. Excellent read, kept my interest, I felt like I got to know these soldiers and wish I could have attended their book signing to meet them personally. Thank you for your service. I am proud to be an American!
