About the Author Freeman was born in Randolph, Massachusetts and at fifteen moved with her family to Brattleboro, Vermont. In 1884, left without any immediate family, she returned to Randolph, where she lived for almost twenty years with her childhood friend Mary Wales. She began to write seriously in the 1970s, & in the early 1880s her work began to appear in such popular magazines as Harper's Bazar and Harper's Monthly Magazine. At forty-nine Mary E. Wilkins married Charles Manning Freeman, a New Jersey physician, and moved to Metuchen. Thereafter she wrote under the name Mary E. Wilkins Freeman. In April 1926, she received the William Dean Howells Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; later that year she was among the 1st women to be elected to membership in the Natl. Inst. of Art & Letters

The story is mainly about the women of the town, who are a close group of hardworking women, and the impact of an outside family on the town. The town has no tourist accommodations, and is not a tourist destination. The Jameson family comes to town for a family vacation. The Jamesons, are mother, grandmother, two children, a boy and a girl, and the husband who still has to work and is only with the rest of his family part time. It seems that the Jamesons have suffered some financial reverses, and thus have to economize for vacation. The go to the small town, and board with one of the women in her house, which has never happened before in the town. Mrs. Jameson is pushy, and wants to change things and people in the small town. The creates friction, Over time, the Jamesons rent a vacant farm, and move to it for the remainder of the summer. They come back the next year, and gradually the town people and the Jamesons get to know each other, and a town boy falls for the Jameson girl. after initial resistance by both mothers.Interesting study of people in a small town at the end of the 1800s. The author does a very good job of bring the characters and the story to life.

Home Town Humor By Kindle Customer A very funny story about a small town and folks from the city who come to live there and the escapades that occur, I have just discovered this author's books and I can't wait to read her other books, so if you haven't read her books before this is a great book to start with.
