About the Author Journalist and award-winning broadcaster Pat LaMarche is a tireless advocate for the poor and neglected those on the margins of society. Delving deeper into these issues, LaMarche's startling proposition is that it is our diversity that unites us. LaMarche sets out to demonstrate this through traveling the country studying, writing & speaking about the similarities and connections between the underclass, the middle class and the financially advantaged. LaMarche advocates for both those challenged by, and challenging to, the ruling elite. Humor is the hammer in her toolbox to bring the average person's reality into perspective. LaMarche urges patience and understanding for those less fortunate and encourages empathy for folks most people would rather not think about: people in homeless shelters, prisons, ghettos, and those unseen millions languishing in rural poverty. LaMarche's passion for humanity led her to study European and American history in college and grad school, but it has been her life's work that has helped her put the events of the past into context with current events. LaMarche's newest book, "Daddy, What's the Middle Class?" is a modern day history book that relates the rise and decline of workers' rights in the United States.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A targeted, incisive and engaging book By Alex Hammer Pat LaMarche is a political icon.LaMarche writes like she speaks. And she speaks likes she lives.Which is to say powerfully and unabashedly.A well known figure in radio in Maine for a number of years, LaMarche has stated that writing is her passion (Pat was also a longtime columnist for the Bangor Daily News and writes for The Huffington Post). You would expect that someone who doesn't go halfway in politics - Vice Presidential candidate for the Green party, major candidate two times for Governor of Maine, sleeping in homeless shelters across the US to publicize the plight of the homeless - wouldn't go halfway either in her writing. And you'd be right.Pat is a voice for those who have, individually and collectively, been marginalized. She believes in bringing dignity to the downtrodden, and respect and opportunity for the common man and woman."Daddy, What's the Middle Class?" leverages LaMarche's strengths of an encyclopedic knowledge of history and her love and refined skill at storytelling. LaMarche's characters jump off the page, and her writing is engaging. Some might think LaMarche overreaches in her judgments and criticisms. Pat is the eternal optimist, fighting against everyday injustice until her final breath. She has devoted her life, and her writing, continuing here, to shine a light on what is wrong and what is right in regard to how we treat each other as human beings, Americans and global citizens. As a result, her writing can inspire you and make you squirm at the same time. But only for your own good.

If you really want to know, "Daddy, What's the Middle Class?" will enlighten and even inspire you. Chock-full of stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things--fighting powerful robber-barons, taking a stand for injustice, thwarting the powerful, and more--this engaging book shines a light on what has happened to cause the middle class to crumble. Pat LaMarche's contrarian research unearths plenty of facts to counter the myths being flung far and wide in media and political debates. It should be required reading in any history classes from high school on up. If we are ever going to take back the democracy that is rightfully ours, this book could fire up the masses. Oh yeah, the controversy about unions? Well, reading Pat's stories gives you plenty of opportunity to see unions for what they are--the way to rebuild the middle class.
