Good Victorian Era Tear Jerker By Red Shoe Lady This most important thing to keep in mind when reading this book is that it was written about 1890, the Victorian Era. That means the attitudes of heroes, villains, and heroines will reflect the attitudes and beliefs of the period…no political correctness regarding the behavior and role of women, class distinctions and separation, religious preferences, etc. In other words, do not apply current day mores to what you read in Victorian/Edwardian fiction and non-fiction -- except to note our differences. Also the novels of this time period are quite dramatic and full of restrained passions. I enjoy reading these novels (and Adeline Sergeant especially) because I feel like I am tossed back in time and experiencing how people felt and behaved -- they are novels of manners -- and not cleaned up for today's audiences. Miss Sergeant wrote more than 90 books in her career, so far I've only read 4 but pretty much enjoyed them. They do get rather repetitious and wordy, but considering that most of them were created as serial novels for magazines and newspapers, that is to be expected. And, like many novels of the era, the plots can be pretty convoluted and endings (almost always "happy ever after") can be very unlikely. Good morals will always win over treachery; villains will be redeemed or punished; heroes will be high principled and handsome; heroines will always be lithe and beautiful and have shining, glorious hair and long eyelashes; and young men will fall in love almost at first sight. This particular story follows all of these criteria. The hero did a despicable deed in his youth (for good reasons, of course), but allowed the local rapscallion to be blamed and punished. The story and romance go from there. It is fun to read, easy to pick up and put down, and a good example of the popular fiction of the era.
