Exciting, colorful, funny adventures from the Lucille Ball of Travel Writing By Robin Sparks In “Wild Life” Lisa Alpine dishes up her favorite tales from 45 years of exploring the globe. I consumed the entire book in one marathon meal, starting at the end with her mother’s fried olive balls and continuing until I reached dessert in the first story, “Licking Monet”.What a romp!Alpine’s love of travel began when she was a teenager on vacation with her parents. As she tells it, she was lying on a Hawaiian beach under a full moon when a poem came to her:"The moon is just a hole in the tent, and the stars are where the cloth wore thin."Then she heard, “Don’t be afraid of what you can’t see. Come, explore.”And so she did.Alpine is an intrepid traveler and story teller who with humor and aplomb, morphs travail (inadvertently becoming a slave laborer in France, finding herself in the middle of the drug trade zone in Columbia, getting tossed into a plane full of smelly fish as it lifted into the air, trapped on a sailboat for weeks off the Galapagos with a contentious honeymooning couple, sleeping in a Ecuadorian warehouse only to learn it was a whorehouse full of bed bugs, sweat and moans…) into a joyful, delightful jaunt across the earth’s varied surfaces, and encounters with sweet, sour and spicy inhabitants the likes of Amazon Fisherman Ray and musician, James Brown.Alpine's humor floats it all. By Susan Alcorn To paraphrase comedian Steven Martin's old line, Lisa Alpine could be "I'm just a wild and crazy woman," and "Wild Life: Travel Adventures of a World Woman" shows us why. Alpine's collection of adventure stories are of travels to exotic lands--and she doesn't bother to sign up for tours--and often vagabonds on her own.She was raised in a suburban environment, but often foregoes the comforts of home to explore foreign cultures. When the jobs that she takes when she runs out of money on her extended trips--waitressing and bartending in Switzerland and cooking aboard a small sailboat in the Galapagos--turn sour, Alpine extricates herself and chalks it up to experience.Whether reading about Alpine's excursion deep into a Berber's encampment in the Atlas mountains of Morocco with her 8-month-old baby or her unique encounters with the big names--such as Cab Calloway and James Brown--at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, or any of her other exploits, you'll surely enjoy reading Wild Life's "too true stories!"

PalmerAssociate DirectorInternational Marine Mammal ProjectEarth Island InstituteBerkeley, CAwww.earthisland.org/immp No, Lisa Alpine is not talking about that kind of wildlife, although she does encounter a few critters here and there (if you like going out at night and looking for the eye shine of caimans in the backwaters of the Amazon). No, the Wild Life that Lisa leads is something a lot of us can envy from afar. Her way of travel is to hit the road and see what happens. She encounters some very wild life indeed, not found in your copy of Lonely Planet. Lisa Alpine is a freelance travel writer, dancer, and giver of workshops, who splits her time between Hawaii and Marin County, CA. (Full Disclosure: I have the pleasure of knowing Lisa and spending some not so wild afternoons with her, and I look forward to spending more.) Her writing will definitely make your laugh, but it can also make you feel very sad indeed. She takes a job in Switzerland at a ski resort, but is kept by the manager (who keeps her passport), so she ends up running the bar and giving out free liquor. This, however, is so successful in packing in customers, including celebrities, that her erstwhile boss enjoys coming and sitting in on the party. She finds herself camping with a Berber tribe in the high mountains of North Africa, where her toddler son is a big hit with the tribesmen. She hitches a ride around the Galapagos Islands aboard a sailboat, but feels so offended by the captain over the way he treats his newlywed wife, that she pushes him overboard, to the wife’s horror. She has an unwanted amorous encounter with a dolphin, apparently attracted to her polka dot bikini. Landing in Vienna in 1972 in the middle of rain, she is befriended by a small old woman, who takes her to her home for the evening. Lisa learns she is a survivor of the Holocaust, and their friendship grows in the few days she can spend before moving on, hitchhiking to Greece. She also shares some of her memories of her mother, who died before the book was completed. In between, Lisa seems to wind up just about anywhere and everywhere around the world. She is a traveler with a keen sense of adventure, and her writing sweeps you along for the ride. One of her stories in this collection, “Fish Trader Ray,” won the Best Travel Story of the Year: Silver Solas Award. This is a fun book that you will enjoy, guaranteed. It may even spark an urge for you to follow in Lisa’s footsteps to find your own Wild Life, whether just around the corner or on the other side of the Earth.
