About the Author MAY AGNES FLEMING was born in Saint John in 1840 to Irish immigrants. Fleming was educated in her early years at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Saint John, where she began writing at the age of thirteen. In 1856 at age seventeen she became the first teacher at Saint John s Roman Catholic school, until her writing became too demanding and she gave up teaching to become a full-time novelist, ultimately moving to New York. She became one of the most popular and successful novelists publishing in the United States in the 1870s and was the author of 47 novels and numerous short stories.

I think I liked it better than "The Baronet's Bride," but this one wasn't too bad."The Baronet's Bride" is a story of revenge and of love. A wronged gypsy woman has placed a curse on the rich baronet who loved then left her. She has handed the hatred of this man down to her daughter and then her granddaughter. It is left to her granddaughter to exact revenge, not on the baronet, but on his son and heir.This son grows up to be a proud and handsome man who falls desperately in love with and marries a poor but beautiful woman who has a secret of her own, a secret she has sworn never to tell.The story has elements of a gothic novel--dark and stormy nights, "a threatening mystery and an ancestral curse" (Wikipedia), a beautiful damsel in distress--without all the gloom and grotesque and supernatural. One character, a New Englander who arrives in England to try his luck at blackmailing, adds a bit of much-needed humor.A quick, fairly entertaining read. I read it in one afternoon when I was in bed with a cold, and it was good enough to make me forget how miserable I was feeling.

The plot was good, the characters vivid. The villain was...more than one! I admit, I didn't want to put it down. And I didn't.
