A dream fulfilled

Traveling overseas and backpacking around Europe seemed like an out-of-reach dream for John Clark, until he learned of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a 500-mile pilgrimage across the country that dates back more than 1,200 years. With encouragement from family and friends, never having traveled outside the United States, the self-proclaimed homebody from Texas hopped on a plane at age 53 alone and headed for the Iberian Peninsula. It wasn’t just the beginning of a month-long journey, but also, as he would discover, the beginning of a new life.

Facing fear, regret and reality

When he arrived in Pamplona, home of the famous San Fermin Running of the Bulls Festival, Clark immediately began to regret his decision. To put it bluntly, he was scared to death. Possessed by an obsessive mind, he could not shake the idea that he was all alone in a foreign country, some 5,000 miles and an ocean’s distance away from home, about to go on a very long walk with nothing but a backpack full of basic supplies. His first impulse was to simply pack up and go back home, but somehow, though full of anxiety, he survived that first sleepless night in a hotel room near the Plaza del Castillo, and began his trek the following day.

What did he discover?

What happened to John Clark on his 500-mile pilgrimage? Did he make it? Find out when you crack open this colorful, insightful, and revelatory memoir full of tears and triumph. Be inspired as you experience this harrowing and heartwarming coming-of-age story that proves it’s never too late in life for a new adventure.

About the Author

John Henry Clark is an award-winning journalist, freelance writer, author and avid golfer who was born and raised in Texas. He grew up in northwest Houston playing sports at Oaks Dads Club and attending church with his parents, but decided as he got older that things he learned in Sunday school no longer made much sense.

Since then, he has spent a lifetime seeking answers and exploring a variety of beliefs. After a successful career as a newspaper reporter, Clark turned his lifetime love for learning into a new career as a public school teacher, and that gave him time during the summer months to pursue his project to research and write a book describing what people believe about God and why they believe whatever it is they believe.

He crisscrossed his beloved state, interviewing fellow Texans at random, and uncovered dozens of fascinating, sometime gut-wrenching stories that reveal not only how life experiences, tragedies and triumphs can shape a person's view of the world and beyond, but also the commonalities shared by all people -- the desire for love and happiness. Read his book, Finding God in Texas, and find answers to the meaning of life, and maybe discover something new about yourself.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. the text reads like a conversation between author and reader By J Julian John Clark’s humility and candor immediately set the overall tone, inviting readers to trust his earnest approach. Friendly and relaxed, the text reads like a conversation between author and reader, and yet he shares the experiences and reflections of his challenging adventure along the Camino de Santiago in eloquent prose. I highly recommend this inspiring book that shows the audience that they too can conquer their fears and gather the courage, strength, and fortitude necessary to set out on their own personal “Camino.”

Laughter and tears along the 500 Camino By John Fish Anyone who has completed the ‘Camino De Santiago’ will know all about what to expect in this world famous pilgrimage. For me this is one trek that is still there and still calls me to this day. ‘Camino – Laughter and Tears’ is a tears and blisters book that also doubles up as a diary of his 500 mile trek. For John a long way from home and never before travelled outside the United States of America at times questioned why he was there and openly talks about his bouts of homesickness, but what shines through his account are the amazing people that he encounters along his journey of discovery. There is a raw honesty about this account that I have not found in any other books I have read on the Camino. The spirit of sharing parts of the walk with people he meets then going separate ways, the painful blisters at the end of every days trek, and the help he received from fellow pilgrims. This is a wonderful account of the journey undertaken by the author and throughout the book there are countless photographs that always help set the tone of the journey. For anyone who has undertaken or anyone still thinking or planning their own Camino De Santiago trek you will love John H. Clark’s account. A real coming of age memoir. ‘Buen Camino’

McKinley I've just returned from walking the Camino Frances from St Jean Pied de Port to Leon and will return next summer to walk from Leon to Santiago. In addition to the needless repetition of blog and journal entries, which felt like padding for lack of anything more to say, I was quite disappointed that the author never really seemed to get the spirituality of the camino experience itself. This is an award-winning journalist? The errors in grammar and the use of profanity were so juvenile. And to be so poorly prepared as to have no clue what the Feast of Corpus Christi is about (I believe there is a city of that name in his beloved Texas) and to dismiss the Pilgrim's Mass in Santiago as a 'mind-numbing church service' not to mention apparently fibbing about his purpose for walking so he could get the Latin version of the compostelano which is only given to those who are walking for religious reasons...tsk, tsk.
