In this case, both a detective and a reporter are in search of a missing German King who had been visiting in Paris, and who was suspected of committing a murder. As usual, in books by Allain, there are disguises, mistaken identities, and daring escapes. A great read, even if the ending is a bit of a cliff hanger. If you enjoy this story, Detective Juve pops up in a few more of the Fantomas books.

Presenting His Royal Highness, Jerôme Fandor By David Swan As in all Fantômas stories we open with a murder but this time Jerôme Fandor is there at the scene of the crime and the accused is the German King, Frederick-Christian. Through a strange series of events Fandor is mistaken for the King for a much longer period of time than one would think possible. Things get trickier as the real King disappears and a bizarre singing noise begins emanating from a local fountain. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that Fantômas is the criminal behind the curtains since this is the Fantomas series.A Royal Prisoner has a simpler plot than previous books and I appreciated that. Not that it’s super simple but the complexity of the plots in the previous stories can leave them quite confusing. Some of the details of Fantômas’s scheme seem bizarre and counterproductive for such a brilliant strategist and the usually clever Fandor makes a mind-blowingly stupid mistake that nearly costs him his life. One of the issues I’ve had with previous stories is the dizzying number of characters but A Royal Prisoner keeps a shorter list. Despite an overall smaller cast of characters Fantômas has no less than three identities in this story, one being a female, and that doesn’t include his Fantômas identity. One wonders how it’s possible that Fantomas could appear as so many people who small to have more than a small bit of history. It would be one thing for Fantomas to simply dress up in different disguises but his identities are known by people. It feels like at some point Juve and Fandor will discover that Fantomas is literally every person in France besides themselves.Fantomas stories follow a general template. A crime is committed, Fantomas is discovered to be the culprit, Detective Juve and Jerôme Fandor discover his identity and corner him. Fantomas escapes. If this were the Detective Juve series we might consider the possibility that Fantomas might get caught but this is the Fantomas series. It kinda makes the endings a bit anticlimactic when all their sleuthing is fated to end in the criminal escaping. The ending here is a bit different than usual but that creates a big problem. It leaves on a cliffhanger and the only copy I can find on Amazon of the next iteration in the series, ‘The Long Arm of Fantômas’, is $50 used. All the other stories were available on Kindle for free. So unless ‘The Long Arm of Fantômas’ is someday released on the Kindle my days of reading Fantomas may have come to an end on a cliffhanger. Darn.

Compelling French Detective Fiction from the 1910s By Kenneth W Zimmerman Jr. A Royal Prisoner is one of the Fantomas detective fiction series from French journalists Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain. The books are extremely enjoyable if a little predictable after reading the first couple books in the series. Besides recommending the books, I also recommend the film adaptation by Louis Fulliade. The films are pretty faithful to the novels they are based on.
