From the 1880s to the end of World War I, the fashionable resort of Bar Harbor attracted thousands of summer visitors with the money and leisure to pursue "the simple life on a grand scale," as A. Atwater Kent put it. They came to rusticate, dance, sail, picnic, flirt--and they did it all with style. Many relaxed at Bar Harbor's lavish hotels, while others built even more lavish and fanciful "cottages" for their own summer retreats. That dazzling era is just a memory now. The Depression and World War II undermined the summer colony, and the Great Fire of 1947 dealt the final blow. Those summer homes and hotels that survived the blaze generally succumbed to changing times, and only a handful stand today.Eighty-six vanished summer palaces are pictured in Lost Bar Harbor. Many never before published photographs from the Bar Harbor Historical Society are supplemented by lively text describing the estates and their colorful inhabitants. It is the most comprehensive collection of early Bar Harbor photographs ever assembled, providing an unparalleled glimpse of one of the world's great resort communities.

Being Californians, we'd never seen anything like it before. The town surely gives the visitor a glimpse into the Gilded Age. I became fascinated, thus I bought a few books (there aren't many) on Bar Harbor from Amazon.com. The best of the lot, in my opinion, is "Bar Harbor's Gilded Century: From Opulence to ashes" by Linda Vandenberg (read my separate review). Next, "Best Of Bar Harbor" by Greg Hartford is a small picture book I always enjoy thumbing through. It gives you many nice photos of how Bar Harbor (and Acadia National Park) look at the present. "Lost Bar Harbor" chalks in at third position. Others might disagree with me on this listing, and that would be perfectly understandable, since the book starts off with a terrific introduction to Bar Harbor's history as a tourist resort. The reasons I placed this book behind "Bar Harbor's Gilded Century" are: (1) the quality of the photos aren't quite as high and (2) the captions occasionally lack interesting content, i.e., just bare-bones information. Still, I don't regret buying the book at all. Any lover of Bar Harbor may treasure it.

The book was a recommended read from a tour we took with local guides. I enjoyed the 'Gilded Age' glamour detailing the 'cottages'. I would have liked more individual stories of the occupants but I realize few wrote those accounts of their daily lives or vacations. Still, the photos lead more to my fascination - some did have interior photos but then again they fall short of the lives within. I found myself re-reading the Great Gatsby because our next stop via the cruise was Newport, R.I. where the 1974 film was shot at a similar mansion..the Rosecliff. History has always been the stuff of curiosity for me and I found the book to be of a collection of photos and names but not the lives.
