About the Author Carlos Peñalba was born in San Sebastian (Spain). Most of his childhood and teenage days were dedicated to playing football (or soccer, as they say in the USA) and being a good student. After obtaining a degree in Business Administration, he spent nine months in the small city of Melilla (North Africa) doing his military service. By then, he had already started playing with a manual Yashica camera as well as having read many of the world's great writers from Proust to Hemingway. He moved to London in 1996 with the objective of improving his already good English. In the British capital he worked at a couple coffee shops and in a popular pizza restaurant chain for a year while he attended different English courses at Westminster College. Once his business English was good enough, he joined a financial software firm as a researcher on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and soon he became the Research Manager of a team covering M&A activity in Europe, Middle East and Latin America. In 2004 the company he was working for asked him for a temporary transfer to their New York office. Eager to expand his horizons, Carlos didn't hesitate to make the move. Once settled, he decided to stay in the Big Apple where he was appointed Product Director and later on Director of Global Operations. In 2009, in the midst of a worldwide financial crisis, Carlos quit his job to travel through Asia and become a writer and a photographer. His initial plan of a full year exploring mostly the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia finally turned into an 18-month adventure. At the end of his long journey through Asia, he started the huge task of starting his career as a freelance photographer, as well as writing a travel memoir about his adventure (The Year I Became a Nomad). Since he has been back from Asia, he has continued to be a nomad, living in different places like New York, La Coruña and Madrid.

Carlos' detailed descriptions, observations, trials and tribulations of his journey through Asia made me feel that I was on his journey as well. I just couldn't put the book down. It is a must read if your mind is inquisitive and you are looking for more in life. It gives so much insight and information about the Asian cultures; it's like a travel guide.

By Kellie C Specter I was stuck for 20 hours (yes, 20 hours!) on airplanes and in airports trying to get from New York to Austin during a major storm. I had "The Year I Became A Nomad" on my iPad and I am so thankful I had it...because I could not put it down! I am a huge fan of travel writing, and have read many authors from Paul Theroux to Freya Stark to Pico Iyer. From the first chapter, Carlos's observations, his dry humor and his curiosity had me hooked. I felt like I was on the trip with him, trekking in Nepal; having a beer on a hot, sticky evening in Vietnam; meditating in India. I've never been to Asia, and it really made me want to go. Along with being a solid travelogue, it is a thoughtful and deeply personal account of solo travel-- the trials, the loneliness and the sheer joy of being alone while exploring some very different cultures. Throughout the book, Carlos recounts what he read while he was on his journey, which was wonderful, because I wrote down many of those books and have even downloaded a few. The ending was a surprise, which I also loved. I highly recommend "The Year I Became a Nomad". I'm sure I'll read it again.

A great travel to your inner soul By Mathieu Ortiz A great discovery of Asia's multiple facets through a thorough and scholar description of its people, its landscapes, its cultural and historical inheritances and modern contradictions.But most importantly The Year I Became a Nomad is fascinating lines where curiosity, admiration, determination, friendship, love, sex, desire, inner introspection, success and also fear, loneliness, anger, sadness, despair, vulnerability, difficulty, tiredness, death and many other feelings intrinsically human constantly catch the reader’s attention. Thank you for sharing your experience Carlos (with an impressive vocabulary by the way) and for leaving your footprint! It teases the reader to become a writer of its own « life » trip!
