Excerpt from Children's Stories in American HistoryMany ages ago in North America there was no spring or summer or autumn, but only winter all the time; there were no forests or fields or flowers, but only ice and snow, which stretched from the Arctic Ocean to Maryland. Sometimes the climate would grow a little warmer, and then the great glaciers would shrink toward the north, and then again it would grow cold, while the ice crept southward; but finally it became warmer and warmer until all the southern part of the country was quite free from the ice and snow, which could then only be seen, as it is now, in the Polar regions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author Henrietta Christian Wright was an American children's story writer who resided in East Brunswick Township, New Jersey. She was born in 1854 in Old Bridge in Middlesex County, New Jersey and died there in 1899 of tuberculosis. She wrote children's books on literature, history and science. One of her books of children's stories, Children's Stories in American Literature: 1861–1896, covered a period of 1660–1860 with great authors like Edgar Allan Poe, William Bryant, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. This book was a part of the everyday schooling of young preteens. In 1883, the New York publisher White and Stokes published Little Folk in Green written by Wright and illustrated at the age of 16 by Miss Lydia (Field) Emmet (1866–1952), who went on to become a noted portrait artist. Wright also produced Children's Stories in English Literature From Taliesin to Shakespeare, in which she introduces traditional songs and literary work by Chaucer, Spenser, Phillip Sidney, and Shakespeare with biographical and historic notes before re-telling their writings in language for children. It was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1889.
